MEXICO: Ponche mexicano
While it looks more like a fruit salad,
ponche is actually a warm beverage Mexican families enjoy on Christmas Eve, usually after Midnight Mass. The recipe calls for boiling fresh tamarind, guava, sugar cane, prunes, apples and tejocotes (small yellow apples) with brown sugar
(piloncillo) and cinnamon. The festive, tea-like liquid is then served piping hot.
