We can thank Coco Chanel for creating the ubiquitous-but-never-tiresome garment on October 1, 1926, when black clothing was typically used for mourning. Nowadays, the LBD is a wardrobe go-to for any occasion, thanks to a style history that includes the opening scene of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and Angelina Jolie's recent leggy red carpet statement.
