She lies, steals, and "carelessly cuts you and laughs while your bleeding..." Stockholm syndrome or a sexist manifesto? Joel's not-so-easy listeners chose the latter. Slate's Ron Rosenbaum called the song a recycling of "every misogynist cliché in the book." But maybe it was more passive aggressive than anything else. Joel wrote the song as a "gift" for his ex-wife. Not Christie Brinkley. The first one. They divorced not long after.
