I think one of the most important things parents and teachers can do is establish a relationship at the beginning of the year. Teachers can use e-mail, newsletters and occasional phone calls home, and parents can use e-mail, open houses, meet the teacher nights and parent-teacher conferences to get to know each other and the expectations for the year. When I had problems with students, I felt better knowing I had already made an effort to communicate with the parents in some way. No one wants to hear something negative about his or her child the first time they meet a teacher!
