According to Chad Sarno, Healthy Eating Research and Development Chef of Whole Foods Market, flavor is typically better when you are eating a fruit or vegetable that's in season. We asked Sarno to to recommend the freshest, tastiest produce available right now -- and tell us the best ways to serve it up. Here's what he had to say...

Brussels sprouts: A member of the cruciferous (broccoli/cabbage) family, these nutritional "giants" are packed with good things, including indoles and sulforaphane, two powerful phytochemicals that help combat free radicals and eliminate toxins in the body. They are also packed with vitamin K, which promotes healthy bones.
How to eat them: Brussels sprouts are getting really popular, and are more versatile than you may think. These baby cabbages can be enjoyed raw, shredded, marinated, pickled, roasted, grilled and steamed.

      Try this:
One of Sarno's favorite ways to prepare Brussels sprouts is shredding them, either with a knife or mandolin. Saute some onions with a small amount of veggie stock until caramelized. Add a few handfuls of shredded Brussels, and continue to cook on high heat until they become vibrant and browned in some spots (approximately 8 minutes); season with sea salt and pepper. Remove from heat, sprinkle with toasted pine nuts and serve with a drizzle of your favorite hot sauce.
