Susan Shapiro is a writing professor, author of 8 books, and has been published in many newspapers and magazines. I took her NYU magazine writing class in 2002 and she remains one of the most inspiring and motivating people I have ever met. She is brilliant, funny, engaging, and would do anything to help her students succeed. Sue has taught 3 to 5 classes a term since 1993. She teaches a practical course on selling your novels called Instant Gratification Takes Too Long and currently a Sell Your Essay seminar. She taught a class at a soup kitchen for 13 years, producing a charity book called Food for the Soul and all proceeds went back to the church. She has helped 50 students publish books in the last 5 years, and 15 students broke into the New York Times last year. Recently she helped a man named Alex Miller write a piece about being a homeless veteran. She edited it and even emailed it in because he did not have internet access. The story ran in the New York Times, and somebody saw it and gave him a hospital job. Now he has a good place to live, proof of her adage Three Pages Can Change Your Life. Not surprisingly, she has an entire Facebook group devoted to former students who adore her as much as I do. I have never met a teacher quite like Sue. I am so thankful and proud to know her.
