Candy Napkin Rings Napkin rings make even an average dinner seem fancy, and fashioning them from candy lends these special-occasion pieces a playful feel both children and adults will appreciate.

To make a jelly bean napkin ring, thread a needle and tie a knot 2 inches from the bottom of the length of string. Thread red, pink, and white jelly beans, one at a time, on to the string until you have about 5 inches of candy. If the needle becomes sticky, wipe it carefully with a damp paper towel. Tie the ends of the thread together tightly, cut off the needle and excess thread, and slip the ring around a plain white napkin. Napkin rings will keep in an airtight container for several months.

Since needles are involved, the jelly bean project is better for older children, but little ones can get involved by decorating napkin rings with conversation hearts. These classic sweet treats boast romantic messages and a shelf life that allows you to store the keepsakes
for years to come. Pick up inexpensive napkin rings--ones with a flat surface are easier to work with--and use glue or royal icing to adhere the candies directly to the surface. Alternatively, wrap napkin rings in aluminum foil and attach the candies to the foil surface. Using royal icing keeps the conversation hearts edible, but if you opt for glue, the napkin rings will keep, stored in an airtight container, for several years. less
