    Turning a mid-life crisis into a multi-million dollar biz: one woman’s story

FX makeup artist Bobbie Weiner is a master of transformation: She's created fake burns, bullet holes, and frostbite. Known around Hollywood as "Bloody Mary," she even turned 200 extras on the set of the blockbuster Titanic into drowned, frozen corpses. But Weiner's most dramatic reinvention was of herself.

In 1993, Weiner's husband of ten years, a prominent Los Angeles surgeon abruptly demanded a divorce. Gone were the big house, the boat, and the tennis club. She was forty-six, alone, and nearly broke. Sitting at a hair salon for what she assumed would be her last touch-up, she told a stylist she needed to get a job quick. He suggested that she study to become a makeup artist for film and television. "This was on a Thursday," she says, "and Monday morning I was sitting at the school."

Weiner's first movie job was on the set of cult horror flick, Pumpkin Head II-- which is where she earned the nickname "Bloody Mary." Two other students had already turned down the gig because the pay was only $35 for about 15 hours on the set. If they had only known where the job might lead.

After that first opportunity, Weiner never stopped working. Initially, she worked mainly on horror films. "I did a lot of research," she says. For Weiner, research meant checking out the hospital emergency room late on Saturday nights to see what was being rolled in and visiting funeral parlors. "That's how I saw what a person looks like when they are dead."

Her big break came when she was given a shot at working on Titanic. "They [the producers] were sitting there with a timer and I made someone dead in seven minutes. That's how I got the job." After Titanic, one of Leonardo DiCaprio's stunt doubles asked her to do his face paint for a San Diego Chargers' football game. "Already, my brain was going," she says. Three weeks later, she had pre-sold a line of line of sports fan make up to more than 40 colleges.

Still, Weiner couldn't get a bank loan of $10,000 in order to actually produce the makeup. Her solution? She sold her car for enough cash to make it happen. At about the same time, Weiner appeared on the morning news to make the newscasters look like victims of the Titanic disaster. An officer from Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton happened to be watching. When he heard her movie makeup had lasted for five to six hours in 90-degree water, he asked to her to create new camouflage paint for his troops. According to Weiner, she called her dad for advice and he said, "You just keep telling them you can do it and you will figure it out Bobbie." She did.

After Weiner's camouflage line, came her "Bloody Mary" brand Halloween makeup including jugs of fake blood and fangs. Weiner never turned down a job or walked away from an opportunity. Referring to her achievements, she says, "There is no such thing as an overnight success. You gotta crawl before you can walk."

Has her success changed her? "I feel blessed, I feel lucky" Weiner says. "I'm still me, but with some extra zeroes."

We all have talents, skills and creativity but often life happens and we abandon/ignore our gifts. The most successful people enjoy what they do- be it writers, singers, actors, rappers athletes, make up artist, classical musicians ect. We may not enjoy a certain genre of entertainment but the admiration for those not afraid to follow their dreams is warranted.

She didn't sit back and expect someone to take care of her - she acted upon her gut feeling and never stopped pushing forward. When you pull yourself up by the bootstraps and make your success on creativity and will power, you not only succeed financially but spiritually.

I like that! It's been said that money changes people, but the truth of the matter is money UNMASKS people....the money just created the opportunity for them to show their true colors. It's nice to know that Bobbie Weiner hasn't changed although her financial status has! Kudos to Bobbie!

I love how these articles are always harkening back to career changes or start-ups in the 1990s. Things were very different then. In this case, Hollywood was booming with independent films. Now indies really have problems getting any financing and the old credit card financing is gone.

Also, the article says nothing of how much TV and film make-up courses cost.... It's not stuff you learn anywhere or just walk in and start doing (tho' they seem to imply this) - In LA it's Joe Blasco and a couple of others. 2 years at a university is cheaper. Back when she started, it was hard to get student loans for something like this. Therefore, she had money from somewhere.

Also, many productions want the make-up artist to also do hair... for that you need a cosmetology license.... That tends to be an 18 month hair stylist course followed by a test that is scheduled only a few times a year in a few locations in California.

Most TV and film make-up and hair people work in salons on the side or work weddings. You can make good lump-sum money, but it's inconsistant. They are always scrambling... particularly when non-union.

If she got onto Titanic - here's how. Titanic was shot in Hermosillo, Mexico. Work conditions were bad all the way around. Kathy Bates walked off set until they got safety harnesses to at least fasten the small children in the lifeboats. I knew some of the make-up people who went down there.... the most any lasted was 3 weeks. They all got sick from being constantly wet.... and working 18 hour days 6 days a week. I think Titanic went thru every make-up artist in Hollywood before they were half finished, so after a certain point, they were hiring anyone they could get. For those who were not hungry for any work at all, working Titanic was simply not worth it. There was too much production going on here in LA.... with much less health risk.

As for her new water-proof make-up inventions. Maybe.... the very nature of "grease-paint" makes it water-proof. What is more difficult is "heat-proof" ... theatrical and film makeup tends to melt.... The real problem with grease-paint is that it shines ( the skin naturally does, as well). This is why actors, etc constantly get powdered down... to cut the shine.

Methinks that her real experise is self-promotion. IMDB shows very few actual film or TV credits for Ms Weiner. Odds are she already had showbiz connections who pointed her in the right direction for self-marketing.... how to get on the news, etc. It's all about the connections and the talent for self-promotion.... not the talent for the work.

Never turn down a job. You never know where it will lead. Follow your instincts. And to all the folks collecting unemployment checks--get out there and start making your own way. The jobs that were shipped out of the country by our financial geniuses are not returning from China anytime soon.

How can a wife of a prominent surgeon be broke? What, no alimony or division of assets in CA? Something sounds wrong here.

Kudos to her but how is she the only woman in LA to ever divorce a prominent surgeon only to go broke as a result? What did she do wrong?
