The Best Jobs for Women in 2012

    By Jenna Goudreau

Looking for a career change or new direction in 2012? You may want to start here.

Jobs expert Laurence Shatkin, Ph.D., author of Best Jobs for the 21st Century, provides a rare look at the jobs that women feel most satisfied and successful in. He compiled a top-10 list based on women's high satisfaction levels, from the National Survey of College Graduates conducted by the Census Bureau; median annual earnings for salaried workers, from the Department of Labor (DOL); and the job outlook through 2018, based on projections from the DOL. The results may surprise you.

At No. 1, post-secondary teachers top the list. Not only do women report very high satisfaction rates in the job, median annual earnings range from $59,000 (for foreign language and literature teachers) to $94,000 (for law teachers), well above the average household income in the U.S. Furthermore, the field is expected to grow by 15% and features an average of 55,000 openings each year.

Shatkin believes women likely value post-secondary teaching for its high earnings, prestige and stimulating environments. The National Survey of College Graduates found that women appreciate a job's location and environment more than men, and Shatkin points out that college students are generally excited to learn, colleagues are of high caliber and college campuses provide comfortable amenities. At the same time, post-secondary teachers have a high degree of independence and autonomy, which Shatkin says almost all workers prize.

In fact, women are so fond of autonomy that they want to be the boss. The chief executive title features high satisfaction rates among women and an incredible $165,000 median salary, which also lands it on ForbesWoman's annual list of the best-paying jobs for women. While they are currently only 25% of all CEOs, the ratio may be changing. In 2010, women received 44% of all MBA degrees granted, a 75% increase since 2000. Meanwhile, 40% of all private companies are now launched and owned by women.

Due to cultural influences, women have traditionally been and continue to be the primary caretakers for the family, says Shatkin, which may help explain why many of the best jobs also feature a fair amount of security. It may be hard to land a job as a post-secondary teacher, anthropologist, oceanographer or natural sciences manager, but once in the position turnover is low, according to Shatkin. In fact, women survey respondents ranked the importance of security above salary and advancement opportunities. "If you're caring for a family," he says, "job security is a top priority."

Women also place more significance on a job's contribution to society than men, according to the survey, which may help explain why women enjoy working as clergy members. The position requires good interpersonal skills and verbal acumen, which Shatkin says women test better in, and gives back to the community in a highly meaningful way.

Similarly, medical professionals like dentists, optometrists and physicians are in a helping field and offer a very necessary and valuable service to society. Annual earnings for medical professionals range from $95,000 to $166,000, depending on specialty, and the jobs are projected to grow by 9% to 22% in the next several years.

Jobs with the lowest satisfaction rates among women include food preparers and servers (median salary: $19,000), retail salespeople ($21,000), production workers ($30,000) and secretaries and administrative assistants ($31,000).

I read this and I'm wondering where the remainder of the article is....? Only one "best" job, and that requires the minimum of a master degree to teach post secondary at, usually, a junior college, and one usually starts on a contingency basis???

and btw I know 5 teachers who got laid off. So no teaching is not a good job right now. Since we have so many school shutting down. Which shouldn't be why don't you do an article about that. Our kids education is more important. 3 Schools have shut down in Illinois just where I live.

COME ON Yahoo- Not one of those jobs are entry level- and the pay for men in the same careers is twice as much. Without at least a masters you mislead women with this article. I worked hard to get my PhD and it took years.

Secondly I hate SLIDE SHOWS- when you advertise a list make it a list.

I do not agree with this artical at all, my 1st husband was a community college teacher and we could hardly pay our rent I had to work 2 jobs as well just to keep food on the table for our children, it cost a fortune to put him thru Harvard and other schools to get his teaching degree it was such an underpaid job he worked at night as a dishwasher just to pay all our bills.

I am 59 years old. I went back to college to get a better job as a medical admin. asst., but do you think I can get myself employed???? No! They want 2-5 years experience! I feel like the time I spent studying was a complete and utter waste of my time and the govt.'s money. I was a housewife for good many years and it was the best time of my life!

Hey! administrative assistants are highly skilled professionals. Most managers don't even know how to type a decent letter let alone how to transfer a call. Admin assistants do everything from accounting to payroll to ordering office supplies. Heck, I even had to pinch hit in our school cafeteria. So how dare you say that admin assistants have a very low satisfaction rate.

      Merry Christmas!

It's not a job, but something extra when you have one. Few years ago I found great way to productively utilize my free time. I use to be a professional, but now I'm a stay at home mom and my kids can safely play by themselves now (under supervision of course) while I enjoy my favorite TV shows from time to time ...with one little difference. Now, while I watch I also take online surveys. One thing to another and I managed to make $4000 last year. I like taking surveys and getting paid, it greatly helps my personal budget since I don't get regular paycheck anymore. In the beginning I wasn't making much because I wasn't signed up for the right survey sites (that pay cash) ...and I did surveys mostly for fun and to get free stuff since I had a regular job at the time.

If you think this could be something for you look up free info sites like surveyjet or zeeses (they both show proof of payments which is great, so you won’t be taking any sweepstake surveys that don't pay ...unless you win)....

Unfortunately a man can't support an entire family nowadays and have a house, car, and "wants" with one "regular" job. I am sure lots of ladies would love to have a steady, high paying job (who wouldn't) but the times have changed and the average family needs 2 working parents to sustain a comfortable life. We need to raise minimum wage to at least $9 /hour. I'd rather see our gov't contribute to struggling businesses than pay for so many people to be on welfare w/ no ambition to work.

What a totally sexist article. I thought we tore down the sex barriers ages ago.
    • Marina  •  Houston, Texas  •  1 month 27 days ago
I say this article talks BOGUS lies. I agree with Marian from Tampa, FL. I did the same thing. I am in debt with 150k student loans just to get an MA and MBA. Now I can not get a job in the field due to lack of experience and guess there is also age discrimination. I am 50. Been looking for 4 years in the field and worst of all the economy goes bad at the wrong time..

So...only women can be happy as teachers? Bah humbug. I've done gold panning, taxi driving, and truck (18 wheeler) driving, and that was just to get thru the University. Now armed with a Bachelors in Business Administration (yes, I'm good at math), I'm now going for the IT field only because computers interest me more than droning on to college students. My dad was a College Professor, got thousands of young men and women onto careers, loved that part but hated putting up with the Administration that ran the College. Watching him, no way would I go into a teaching career. He did, however, teach technology. That part stuck with me. Please don't pigeonhole us women like that, my dad always told me, "Go for the guy's job. You won't starve." So, that's what I always did, your article was downright crippling. And you only mention teaching, and want to show us women the rest of our job possibilities IN PICTURES????? And a woman wrote this?? Did no one proofread this article B4 posting?
