Rice isn't only for cooking and feeding our families; we can use this common kitchen staple for so many other purposes. If you find yourself with some leftover, uncooked rice, try some of these helpful tips to help out around the house. You can use uncooked rice in the kitchen for restoring your blender back to almost new or even use it to prevent your tools from rusting. After trying some of these ideas, you will find yourself keeping some around the house at all times.
For blender blades
When my blender starts to act up and not chop ice as well as it should, I don't throw it out and get a new one, I use the help of some uncooked rice instead. A lot of times when our blenders seem to fail at chopping up ice, it doesn't mean that they have gone bad; all they may need is for the blades to be sharpened.
Take about a half cup of uncooked rice and pour it into the blender. Make sure it's plugged in and the top is securely shut. Now just run the blender with the uncooked rice inside for about a minute or two. The uncooked rice will sharpen the blades making it almost like new. It works great, and I can easily make my smoothies again with no problem.
Prevent tools from rusting
Even though my husband takes really good care of his tools, sometimes rust can be a problem. It's very annoying to get into the toolbox that we have in the trunk of our car and find out that the tools have become rusted. He doesn't use those tools as often as the ones in the garage.
I found to keep moisture out of the toolbox is to put some uncooked rice in there with the tools. The rice will absorb the moisture, preventing rust from forming on the tools. Since learning this neat trick, it has saved us money from replacing rusty tools.
For the holidays
To decorate the sides of my walkway during the holidays, I seek the help of uncooked rice. I use the rice to weigh down the bottoms of the luminaries so they won't topple over when they are lit. The rice helps to keep them in place so they can light up my driveway and walkway. I wouldn't dare decorate without the uncooked rice.
Next time you are at the grocery store buying some rice, why not pick up an extra bag or two so you will always have some on hand to help you out around the house. You'll be glad you did.
