J.K. Rowling's fans weren't given much to salivate over when publishers released her new book cover on Tuesday. The red cover has a wide yellow border, white lettering and a check-marked box in the center of the page. Unlike the best-selling Harry Potter series, readers do not get a visual peek into the storyline of Rowling's new offering.
Geared to the adult reader, "The Casual Vacancy" cover preview was released by Little, Brown and Company. According to the publisher, Rowling's new mystery book kicks off in a small English town known as Pagford. After a reputable parish council member is killed, the search for truth begins. Details are scant, but people who love Rowling's descriptive writing style look forward to its September 27 release date.
Her first book since ending the Potter series, J.K. Rowling tells the BBC that her new work will be very different from her previous materials. Referring to the world's favorite young wizard, she says, "The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry's success has brought me."
With seven Potter books under her belt, Rowling's sales have reached over 450 million worldwide. In 1998, the book "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was picked up by Scholastic books and the rest is history. Children loved the story of Harry, Hermione and Ron and stayed true to Rowling throughout her entire Potter series.
The author warns readers that "The Casual Vacancy" is a very different book from any in the Harry Potter series. So far, there are no signs that fans will find wizards, dragons or a charming world of magic. However, it's safe to say that readers will be carried away, again, by the magical pen of J.K. Rowling.
