On any general day your regular skin care routine should include at least cleansing, toning and moisturizing, both day and night (especially if you wear make-up). These important steps help keep our faces beautiful, clean and healthy. But, when your skin starts to get dried out then it is time to add a few things to the normal routine. Add, but do not change your regular routine. The things following will help moisturize your skin; they will help combat dehydration and they are just all around healthy. If you are suffering from dry skin places other than your face these items can help with that too. They include extra skin care items that help on the outside, and some internal health tips to help your skin from the inside out.
Exfoliating is an excellent way to take care of dehydrated skin. First of all, it removes the dead dry skin from the outside allowing the fresh, clean skin underneath to shine through. Only use gentle exfoliants, harsher ones can damage the skin and cause some pain. Exfoliate regularly, but one one or two times each week. Exfoliating too much can cause the skin to become even more dehydrated because it also removes the essential oils from the skin. Your skin produces healthy oils that can not be replenished if they are cleaned away too often without being allotted time to regroup.
When you are suffering from dehydrated skin it is important to use moisturizer more than just morning and night, especially if you are spending time outside. During cold weather the oils from your skin can get sucked up by the dry air, so it is important to moisturize before going out into the cold. During the summer swimming and sunbathing can dry out the skin. Use sunblock that contains added moisturizers, or at least sunscreen that does. Reapply moisturizer after swimming, unless it is water proof.
Picking the right foundation can mean the difference between a dry looking face and a fresh looking face. Foundations that contain ingredients like silica pr silicone can help to seal in moisture. If you can not find a foundation you like that does this then make sure to put on a moisturizer prior to putting on your foundation. This will help your foundation go on smoother and make sure that you do not have any crusty or dry looking spots on your face.
Use a hydrating mask to moisturize your dry skin. A hydrating mask is one that does not dry out while it is on your face. Making a homemade hydrating mask is easy if you just use some plain yogurt as the base. If your skin is dry and itchy, mix a cup of oatmeal with a cup of plain yogurt. Leave it on your face for about ten minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
Taking care of dehydrated skin does not just happen on the outside. What we do to the insides of our bodies makes a difference too. Getting the right amount of essential fatty acids will keep your skin healthy and hydrated. The best way to get this healthful oil is by eating fresh fish at least once a week. Another way is to take fish oil or flax seed oil every day (follow the instructions on the container). Keeping your electrolytes balanced is another key to keeping your skin hydrated. The best way to do this is to buy some Emergen-C. Mix the powder in a bottle of water (following package instructions) and drink up the antioxidants it contains. Eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruits too!
