This year ForbesWoman inaugurates its first annual list of the Best Cities for Working Mothers. To calculate the rankings, we started with the 50 largest cities in the U.S. and the premise that different mothers have different needs. So while it's safe to say that all moms want a secure and protected place for their children to live in, first-rate medical care and excellent schools, if they're running a business or earning a paycheck, there are other important considerations.

Best and worst cities for an economic turnaround

Clearly, there is no crystal ball to tell us when this economic downturn has turned its last corner and is heading back in a steady, positive direction. But some areas of the United States are poised for a quicker rebound when the economy does tick upward, either because they weren't caught up in the housing bubble to begin with or because they haven't lost as many jobs as other regions.

Ever wonder if the city you're working in is the best place for the job you do? It's the kind of thing you probably only wonder if you get laid off from your job and are trying to find another like it. Or if you being paid a pretty good salary but it doesn't feel like it goes very far.

BusinessWeekonline.com and Payscale.com looked at the 25 largest metro areas in the U.S. to find out which offered the best results for 20 jobs ranging from architects to nurses to financial analysts. Houston came out on top in nearly every job category.
