align="left" height="381" width="300">The Cash for Clunkers
programs has ended, and there will be somewhere
between 700,000 and 800,000 new vehicles on the road because of it,
and the same number of older, presumably gaz-guzzling models off of
them. The program has been deemed a success, though car dealers are
still waiting for their reimbursements from the government ($3,500
or $4,500 for each car). They are crossing their fingers that a
very finicky computer system will actually be working today, the
deadline for submitting the (13-page!) applications for each
cash-for-clunker exchange.

Tempting as this program was, we didn't really pursue whether
our 100,000-plus-mile van qualified, knowing we would still save
more in the end if we get a few more years out of our trusty family
steed. But, oh, how my heart skipped a beat when I read about a
simillar <a rel="nofollow" href=

$300 million program to encourage we sluggish, skeptical consumers
to buy energy-efficient appliances.

"Cash-for-Clunkers" program started, it
nearly stopped. But it seems it may restart, since <a rel=

the House speedily voted to fund an additional $2
billion for the popular program. Clearly, it did what
it was supposed to do -- inspire people to buy cars and jump-start
a struggling U.S. auto industry. All Driving a clunker? Or at
least an older-model, gas-inefficient vehicle? <a rel=

Congress has approved a "cash-for-clunkers"
program, designed to get fuel-hungry cars off the
road, and--more to the point--get more people into car dealerships
to buy new cars.

If your vehicle qualifies, it could mean a $3,500 or $4,500 voucher
toward the purchase of a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

The program will run until Oct. 1, or until a $1 billion limit in
vouchers is reached. Here's how it works:
