Secrets to workout success: Bob Harper on how to fuel your body

So here you are, ready -- really ready this time -- to get
healthier, get your body in better shape, and maybe even lose a few
pounds.

You're geared up with your pedometer, heart rate monitor, gym
membership, favorite workout wear, and may have even cleared off
all the Christmas wrapping supplies from the treadmill. You are set
for a new season of "The Biggest Loser" (a new season
begins Tuesday night!) so you can even be supported while
you're watching television. You've added exercise to your
daily calendar, paid up-front for a Pilates class, or have hired a
sitter so you can have reliable times to focus on yourself each
week. You've filled the fridge with healthy foods and made meal
plans so you'll dine well rather than drive-thru.

All this motivation is great, but there's one thing you can do
to squash all that energy before you ever step on a treadmill or
lift a dumbbell. According to Bob Harper, one of the "The
Biggest Loser" trainers who we love and trust, you can
sabotage yourself by not eating a pre-workout snack and
not drinking enough water. Bob explains why here:
align="left" height="300" width="300">Drink water. Drink more
water. Drink water before and after you exercise. Sure, I'd
heard all of that advice a million times but somehow, when I did my
first distance triathlon in the heat of the competition, I forgot
all about what I’d read in EatingWell Magazine’s article <a rel=

“Eat to Win” about what to eat and drink while you exercise. I
mean, it was sweltering out there. It was a dry hot day on a sunny
course. I was doing better than I ever expected. Felt great, in
fact. So why stop at the water stops? Why let someone pass me?

I know how important it is to stay hydrated and I try to sip
water all day, but sometimes I fall behind. So I also try to eat
foods that can contribute to my fluid intake, helping to prevent
the headaches and sluggishness caused by dehydration. Another good
reason to eat water? Research shows that <a rel="nofollow" href=

eating foods that are full of water helps keep you satisfied on
fewer calories. These are four of my favorites:

propose we each concentrate on making simple changes that will have
a significant impact on how we feel this year. Here are six great
ways to get started.
