4th of July recipes were pretty
straightforward—mostly burgers and hot dogs. But now that my
parents have moved to coastal Maine, the typical 4th of July fare
has gone out the window. Goodbye hot dogs, hello lobster. Lucky for
lobster lovers like me, lobster is pretty inexpensive this year,
and even if you don’t live on the coast, you can still find it at
well-stocked grocery stores.

Here is my complete 4th of July menu with tips on how to shell a
lobster...

Recession? What recession? Pass the lobster, please.

height="308" width="264">The economy is in the crapper, we're
all losing our jobs to the end of year budget slice-and-dice, and
Christmas is going to be kind of depressing. You know that things
are really bad when the
price of lobster has dropped so much that it becomes
recession-proof dining. Although, really, when you think about it,
even at $10 a pound, it's cheaper to make lobster at home than
go out for a mediocre burger at Applebee's, and at those
prices, you can afford to get a little reckless with your
ingredients and try something new.

Project Recipe: Lobster and Shrimp Cioppino

THE RECIPE:
Lobster and Shrimp Cioppino (See Bridgette's version HERE)

Even before I checked out the credits and learned this recipe
came by way of Nancy Oakes at
Boulevard, I could tell
this was a restaurant recipe, only slightly modified for the home
cook. You'd think that working in a restaurant kitchen would give
you a great foundation for subsequent cooking at home, but you
would be so wrong. Home cooking is to professional cooking what
building a redwood deck is to highrise construction.

This year I’ve been to Cape Cod for fried shrimp and clams and Maine for exquisite lobsters straight out of the “pound.” But there’s no need to travel for these kinds of goodies. It’s easy to make fabulous summer seafood recipes at home. And luckily it’s simple to make them healthier and just as delicious.
