UPDATED Mammogram recommendations change drastically: This scares me

A government task force reversed long-standing recommendations on when women should start having mammograms and how often they should have them. According to the new standards, women should start having mammograms at age 50 rather than at 40, and should have them every two years. Just as shocking, the task force said breast self-exams are not effective and women should not be instructed to do them monthly.

This afternoon I had a mammogram. My Mum is a breast cancer survivor, I’ve had pretty ‘sick’ boobies a couple of times (mastitis while breast feeding, blocked/calcified ducts) and I’m fifteen years younger than my Mum was when she got cancer soooo, in I went.

Dr. Kate, I had a baseline mammogram, and two lumps were found in my left breast, so I was sent to get an ultrasound. The doctor did not really say too much. She asked me if I had an infection in my breast, I said no and that was that. She said that she really couldn't tell anything else…

I have to wait HOW LONG to schedule my mammogram?

Today, I am having my first mammogram. Although I write about a lot of personal things, I didn't really intend to tell all of the interwebs that I am about to have some really high-tech, expensive portraits of my breasts taken this afternoon. The thing is, I am feeling really lucky that I got the appointment at all.
