The adage goes that "a picture is worth a thousand words," but if you ask me, shoes can be just as telling. In the eighties, the punks identified themselves with Dr. Martens; skaters do it with Vans. SJP had her Manolos, and the Hollywood crowd loves their Louboutins (cue the J. Lo song). So when an e-mail popped up in my in-box from the magazine Figaro Japon asking me to name my favorite shoes of the season ("Japanese reader love your style!" it read in flattering but broken English), I found myself confronted with the all-important question of whose shoes I want to step into this spring.
