Six words nearly turned my day upside-down: "Mom, I have a
sore throat."

My son stood in the hallway outside my bedroom door yesterday
morning, looking forlorn. Immediately, I ran through my day in my
head and asked myself a series of questions:

Would I be able to…

Mothers: How long has it been since you put your own health needs first? (Plus, 6 posts to help you do just that)

align="left" width="331" height="221">There was a time last fall
when my 4-year old son and I happened to be sick at the same time.
While it might sound crazy to someone who isn't a parent, most
of you will get that the norm for us is to pass a bug back and
forth for what seems like an eternity rather than both of us
battling it at once. But this time, there we were, a bed full of
misery and wadded up Kleenex.

It wasn't until about 24 dreadfully long hours in that I
realized that although I'd given my son his medication like
clockwork, I hadn't taken anything myself to ease my own
symptoms.

align="left" width="300" height="400">A wave of coughing,
congestion, and discomfort has swept through my home. It came on
quickly, as it usually does, during the weeks when I haven't
had enough sleep and the kids at my son's preschool seem to be
more sniffly than usual. It's inevitable every that every
couple of months during the winter, we will go through an alarming
number of tissues, cartons of orange juice, and hours spent sitting
in a steamy bathroom.

I've gotten pretty good at handling cold symptoms, especially
<a rel="nofollow" href=

since I've been a parent, and have my basket of
medicines and remedies on the ready. What I am not good about,
quite honestly, is taking time off to really fight back against the
germs and weariness.
Sick Day Policy For Motherhood

I don't remember my mother EVER having a cold, although I'm
sure she did. I have some friends who insist that their husband
stay home from work until they are well and then I have others who
plow through like they aren't sick at all. I've never
really been clear on...

Taking an un-sick sick day can save your sanity

I tend to do “old skool” parties. You know, the type we had as kids. No jumpy houses, no pony rides, no entertainers, no frills. My son’s party will be at the park down the street. The highlight this year will be a piñata.

Frills or not, birthday parties are a lot to manage on top everything else I am managing right now. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to plan my son’s birthday party. It’s the shopping, the organizing, the set-up, and my least favorite, the clean-up that always seem to leave me in a big ball of stress by the end of the party.

To get everything ready, I am taking a sick day today.
