What Do You Splurge and Save On?

SPLURGE: Jeans and handbags
Really great jeans wear well so they last longer. (I’m still wearing a pair of Joe’s Jeans I bought in 2003.) I also splurge on handbags. My rationale: I take the subway instead of owning a car, so my handbag is the “vehicle” for my notebooks, magazines, umbrella, lunch, and often my laptop. I’d rather buy one $400 bag and have it forever than have to keep replacing junky ones.

Where do you inadvertently splurge?

For me, it's H&M (I always stop by for some layering t-shirts and walk out with multiple bags of things that don't fit in my already-packed closet). And also, maybe surprisingly, The Container Store. I cannot wind my way through its maze of aisles without buying at least four storage solutions—not only am I convinced that by maximizing my closets I can add hundreds of square feet to my apartment, but I just love canvas bins, and paper drawers with all my heart. Organizing to me, is what packing is to Shop Girl, Emily Hsieh. Fortunately, The Container Store is having a huge sale, which extends to the brilliantly space-saving, Lucky-favorite, huggable hangers.

I think I've broken the five-hundred mark on one or two occasions, for job interview dresses (completely worth it when you get the job, totally not if you don't). Five-hundred is a lot though: Even my wedding dress was less than that. So, why I am a sincerely contemplating...
