Let’s say you’re an elementary school teacher and your students’
moms show up to a parent conference in low cut shirts, mini skirts
or tight jeans. Would it be appropriate to write a note
asking them to dress “discreetly” for conferences instead? A rather
humorous letter…

Was the crack baby angst overblown?

By Madeline Holler Strollerderby/Babble One of the big news stories
in the 80s and 90s was about crack babies -- kids whose addict moms
continued using during pregnancy and after. The babies -- crack
babies -- were born with varying amounts of the drugs in their
systems. Much hand-wringing (and social-servicing, and child
removal) ensued. Researchers have been following a significant
number of these babies-now-tweens. What's the one thing these
researchers have found in the crack babies that truly surprised
them?

Did you give your son a criminal's name?

By Madeline Holler Strollerderby/Babble I KNEW we should have gone
with Michael! My husband and I had protracted discussions on what
we should name our new son. We went with Earl (shut up, it's
cute!) for many reasons, including the fact that it wasn't
super common. But according to the science, or maybe crazy science,
we've predisposed the boy to criminal behavior.

Separate planes: sensible idea or touch of the crazies?

Back before I had kids, a friend told me how her parents, who
traveled frequently overseas, always booked separate flights. If
one of the planes went down, they reasoned, their children
wouldn't be orphans. I thought their gloomy scenarios were a
little over the top -- did they also always take separate cars?
Then I became a parent.

My beautiful cervix

By Madeline Holler, Strollerderby No, no, that's not me
bragging. It's some other woman. She's showing off her
cervix in all its course-of-a-monthly-cycle glory on her blog My
Beautiful Cervix. I'm no judge when it comes to an internal
organ's appearance, so I wouldn't know a beautiful cervix
from an ugly one. (Right now, I'd settle for one stretched open
10 centimeters, but I'm 9 months pregnant.) Still, her daily
cervix update is interesting -- she really put a lot into it (word
choice, Madeline, word choice).

So Obama is the president. Now what?

Madeline Holler, Strollerderby So the Straight Talk Express drove
off a cliff. And Sarah Palin has been packed off to Alaska to
endure a long, cold winter of political career repair. Barack Obama
is getting a tour of the White House from George W. Bush. And Joe
Biden is kicking back thinking the gaffes will not end but the
consquences might. But the rest of us. What about the rest of us?
What in the world are we supposed to do now?

little my marriage means to me. My husband? Oh, he means the world
to me. Our little committed family? Truly, the greatest thing I
have. But the marriage? Enh. I'm just not one to count on paperwork
and words and ceremonies and stuff like that to shape my personal
life....
