Do you use Twitter? Here's why you should

align="left" width="400" height="125">Confession: I've jumped
on the Twitter
bandwagon. And I really like it. Maybe as much as I like Facebook.

I started doing it as a way to promote some of my freelance
writing, but pretty soon I was using it as a way to keep up with a
few of my friends on the fly. In spite of my crazy-hectic life, I
feel like I don't have all that much to say when a friend
emails to ask "So, what have you been up to?" But with
Twitter, I can fire off a status update into the ether, and read
ones from my friends. It's like staying in touch without
actually, you know, touching.

Shut off your inner control freak

align="left" width="250" height="187">I am a control freak. If any
of my friends or family members are reading this, they are probably
laughing because that may be an understatement. Basically, I feel
more secure when I know what's going on, and I'm more
likely to know what's going on if I'm the one holding all
(or most) of the cards.

Not realistic. Or healthy. And it only gets worse around the
holidays or when we're visiting family, which is where I am
right now.

I read a great article a while back about
getting along with that super-controlling coworker, I quickly
realized I could easily apply it to myself. From there, it
didn't take too much brain power to understand that ditching my
inner control freak could make my life a little easier all
around.

Here are five ways to shut off your inner control freak.

I'm not Martha Stewart... who has time to decorate?

I feel like I should make the
effort to festoon the house with snowflakes and lights. Most of the
houses in my sleepy little New England town slipped into full fall
regalia the instant the leaves started changing; now they've
moved on to inflatable Santas and brightly lit reindeer and
trees that sparkle with tiny white lights. People around here hang
out cute little flags with various icons celebrating various
holidays at various times of year and, as in the department stores,
the holiday-themed adornments appear the day after Thanksgiving, if
not before.

Not at my house. Oh sure, we've picked up and decorated our
tree, but it's inside the house, not on the front lawn.
There's a single electric candle in each window, but splendid
decorations? Nope. Because, truth be told, I don't have the
time. But, also, I don't have the inclination. Forgive me,
Martha Stewart, for I have sinned: I don't decorate.
