A New Study Says Women Wear $1,500 Worth Of Clothes And Accessories A Day

Seems a few of us were suffering from sticker shock this morning when we learned that the Sex and the City 2 costumes are worth a whopping $10 million--but I was even more surprised to learn what the average woman's wardrobe is valued at.

Here's the deal with the study, as told by Stylelist: "Conducted by UK insurance company Sheila's Wheels, the survey of 3,000 adults found that a woman's daily ensemble costs on average $137 more than a man's. The total (cue cha-ching! sound effect) reportedly includes underwear, $39; a skirt, $44; top, $33; knitwear, $57; coat, $94; tights, $6; shoes, $75; watch, $112; and jewelry, $552. A woman's handbag, $155, and its contents--including a $155 mobile phone and cash, tickets, and passes amounting to $213--were also reportedly included, resulting in a grand total of $1,534.28." The survey also says that the value of an outfit can increase by $102 for special occasions.

Call me crazy, but that sounds like a lot of cash to be wearing on your back each day (and counting the cash in your wallet doesn't really sound like the same thing as "wearing" it to me, but whatever--I'm lucky if I have three singles in my wallet at any given time, so that part doesn't really effect me!). Here's what I'm wearing today:

    - Henri Bendel private label striped blue dress: FREE! It was an editor gift, but its actual value is around $120
    - Gap Kids boys' military jacket: $39.50
    - Newport News flat sandals: $15
    - Rebecca Minkoff morning after mini bag: $400 (contents, including phone and cash, around $150)
    - Beaded bracelets: $4 on the street
    - Underwear and bra: Bra was free at a Calvin Klein event but worth $50; underwear $7 at American Eagle
    - Forever 21 rose stud earrings, $3

My grand total is around $788, which is only $30 more than half of their estimate. I know I'm a really smart shopper, but still....does the $1,500 estimate seem high to you girls, too?

How much do you think what you're wearing today is worth? Share!

Under Items: Bealls Outlet:$3.50 and: Walmart: $1.50 (both on sale)
Purse: blue buckle hobo bag: GoodWill: $3.50
      Contents:around $50

I was wearing more than I thought, and I didn't count my hair clip, around three dollars. I buy alot,if not all, of my items on sale and/or at thrift items. Nothing I buy (other than shoes) is ever over $10-$15. I didn't know whether to count my makeup, if so, that would add up to be around 10-15, full face makeup. So altogether about $120-$130. WOW. Who knew?

The author's purse cost more than my wedding dress, so I'm thinking we run in different social circles...

Anyone who spends that much on clothing is shallow. I'm glad I don't personally know any women that shallow.

give or take the extra 500 in the 1500, yeah that's about right. . . especially if you buy QUALITY
just because you're wearing 1500 dollars worth of stuff doesn't mean you're splurging on expensive things all the time, think GOOD INVESTMENT
1 really good 40 dollar bra can last for years same with a good pair of underwear, purse etc.
I've had the same 500 dollar brooks brothers coat for the past 6 years, and STILL going which is far more cost effective than buying a cheap coat every year
or a pair of 500 + dollar PRESCRIPTION glasses, that I've had for 3 years ( still going ) , or a quality 250 dollar bag or more

if you pay more initially for quality you spend less in terms of longevity, quality over quantity, you'll always look fabulous in quality wardrobe staples for years as apposed to blowing your hard earned cash on cheap kmart target disposable clothing for the moment

$1,500 is WAY TOO HIGH! omg!

I consider myself an average shopper- i have a few higher end items as well as less expensive items:
Black leather ankle boots- $50 on sale
7 for all Mankind jeans- $100 on sale at Leohmann's
      Victoria Secret Bra- $50
      Target undies- $10
      Target black tank top- $10
      Cardigan from Macy's- $40
      Earrings from Macy's- $20
      Elliot Lucca Bag - $200
      Coach Wallet- $200
      Cellphone - $70

= $750 total. Way less than the "average"...and still included designer jeans, wallet and purse!!

Home computers came out on the market too late for when I was working and needed clothes. I had to have just about the entire QVC Citiknits line since day one. Found K-Mart for shoes recentley and stocked up as if I was going to live 200 years they were so inexpensive. State owned mental hospitals don't furnish clothing and I hope my now massive collection gets there. Moved to the city and smart people don't carry hand bags or wear jewlery. The most I ever spent on a skirt was 100.00 for a raw silk line long died to match. My gold collection I got from a pawn shop when prices were low and I do so wish I got more.

That's insane! Over a grand a day? Who can afford that! Assuming you wear pieces for an average of a year or two, how much would you be spending annually?

A black wrap shirt from Bananna Republic- $12

Sterling Silver earings from Kohls- $4

Vera Bradley Bag from a consignment shop- $5

These people need to do studies on thifty women!

Not in my world. Didn't before the economy took a dive and don't know. We know who we are. We don't need to convince people with expensive name brand items with their logos plastered over the item. If they want us to wear and carry their logos - they can pay us.

I don't think jewelry should count. It isn't meant to be "used up" like clothes. It's meant as something else. So I won't include my gold bracelet, earrings or wedding rings (they were all gifts anyway):

Polo shirt - Work freebie, but let's say $35 'cause it's nice
      St. John's Bay jeans - $20
      VS bra - $35
      FOTL panties - $4
      LL Bean shoes - $40
      Glasses - $200

Ok, so my glasses threw me over, but they could be considered jewelry too: they're not something I change and they're not meant to be used up. My total came to $334... That's higher than I expected!

Not in my world- Jeans from KMART $ 9.99, Shoes from Payless, $ 16.99.
      Underwear about $ 20.00.
Top was a gift from a friend from Coldwater Creek. Pocketbook, Korean
discout shop $ 27.00. Even my makeup is from the drugstore. Who came
up with this ridiculous $ 1500? I love thrift store shopping. Have gotten some incredible great bargains, including an Henri Bendel sweater
      for $ 4.

      Let's see:

      silver hoops: $14.00
      bass sandals: $20.00
citizen watch: a gift (how do you value a gift other than priceless)
      tee shirt: $18.00
      capri's: $27.00
      bra and undies: $20.00
      grand total: $99.00

      um, yeah, OK....

Obviously this is aimed at the idiots who pay 300+ dollars for shoes and purses, 100+ for a simple pair of jeans that you could get from max ten, and pointless designer lables. >< give me a pair of jeans, a tee-shirt, cheap flip flops and my wallet and im good.

I think the average woman is posting in here.... Where did they get "average" from did they poll in one area of an area that is wealthy?? I think the numbers are waaaaaaayyyyyy off. I have lived in a lot of areas of the US and have a lot of different friends and even when I could afford to buy more spendy ensembles I thought it was stupid. I think this story is plain silly! The average woman most likely wears under 100 bucks including the undies and the purse and sunglasses!! My opinion!
