Would you believe—a manicure that really lasts 14 days?

Forget oversized handbags, statement necklaces, and sky-high stilettos: a shiny manicure is the "It" accessory of the moment. Beige neutral nails and bold bright polish are both on-trend this season, but in a time of recession, many women are going the DIY route with their nails. Who wants to spend $15 to $25 on a manicure that chips after two days? Well, the folks at CND are hoping to bring ladies back to the salon with Shellac, an innovative hybrid nail color that they guarantee will last 14 days.

Yes, you read that right. Shellac manicures last two whole weeks, and I should know. I tried the Shellac manicure at the end of April and documented the entire process so I could report back. As someone who does her own nails or gets a manicure about once a week, I was prepared to be a tough critic, but I was won over by Shellac pretty quickly. It does cost more than a regular manicure (typically around $40 to $45), but the results are well worth it. While nail innovations like the heat-activated Minx foils and pricey gel formulas like Calgel have become trendy, no other system has given me great results with a guarantee.

The Shellac manicure is completely unique and revolutionary. Have you ever gotten a manicure and then reached for your keys and ruined it? Have you ever gotten your nails done for an event the next day, and had your manicure chip before the festivities begin? Have you ever painted your nails before bed and woken up with sheet marks in them? Have you ever gotten busted at work for trying to redo your nails? Personally, I can say "yes" to all of these things, which is why I'm completely smitten with Shellac, the manicure that requires no drying time and lasts two weeks with no issues whatsoever.

"Our chemists invented a modern solution to the normal polish inconveniences that frustrate women," says CND co-founder and style director Jan Arnold. "Shellac is fret-free and convenient. Women can finally get their time back." How does Shellac get around the dry time? CND has created a special UV lamp that accommodates both hands and feet and cures the polish as you go. (The machines can easily be completely washed and sterilized between customers.) Shellac paints on just like a regular polish using specially formulated base coat, two layers of color, and top coat. After each coat of polish is applied, you put your hand under the timed lamp while the other hand is being painted. As soon as the manicurist is done with your nails, you can dig into your purse for your keys without any concern of smudging or chipping. They are 100 percent dry in the same time it takes for a normal manicure. I tried scratching at my nails, and even rubbing them along a brick wall--the polish stays put with a gorgeous, shiny finish. Expect your nails to look exactly like this for two weeks. Mine endured sinks full of dishes, harsh cleaning chemicals, and many hours of typing for 16 whole days.

Removing the polish is equally innovative. Try as you might, normal nail polish remover will not do the trick. This stuff is strong. You must return to the salon, and after 10 minutes under CND's remover wraps your lacquer will literally glide off. These fun little stickers keep acetone concentrated over the nail, so chemicals won't bother your skin. There is no rubbing and no sticky polish with cotton sticking to it, plus your hands are free to read a magazine while you wait. Your manicure will come off immediately after 10 minutes. Ten minutes for a perfect two-week manicure? No sweat. Now you can get a Shellac manicure at your leisure days before a wedding or vacation and have it last until well after your return. Pretty impressive stuff, if you ask me.

Shellac nail color is hypoallergenic and "3-Free," which means no formaldehyde, toluene or DBP. Twelve of CND's most popular shades are available in Shellac, with another 12 launching by year's end, and more to come. Check out my slideshow to see how Shellac is applied and removed, and how well it wears. I had my nails done about 3 times in less than 2 months with CDN shellac polish. it chipped within a few days every single time. I have no idea how they say that it lasts. until there's really a nail polish that lasts that long, theres no point. dealing with chipped polish is so frustrating and not worth having to paint every few days.

I've had an acrylic overlay on my natural nail for years with no problems. I've decided to give this a try there's a shop in my area that will remove the overlay and use Shellac for $27.00. She doesn't charge extra for french. My nails can go at least three weeks without a problem, sometimes four weeks,so I'm going to give this a try. Shop owner said they have lots of colors available now.

If money were no object, I'd love to get one of these manicures every two weeks. But I can't afford spending over $1,000/year to keep up with these. Sorry!

I had ny nails done and yes two weeks, then I tried to get it off, I could not, I had to go back to the saloon and they took it off, I got another manicure old fashion polish, Since I am a senior it was to costly for me to keep up. I can see geting my nails done for vacation, but way to expensive unless you have a great job, I don't like to see polish half off, that is horrible

My friend and I started getting the "no chip mani" about a year ago... After $50 every 2-3 weeks for 6 months, we both realized that after less the a week at least one of us had a chip. We both decided to lay the no chip to rest... Then about a month ago I had a wedding to go to and thought I'd get it one last try, well after 2 days both my thumbs were chipped and after a week I had a combined 6 nails on both hands with a chip or nic... So no, for an everyday women who does dishes and takes showers and works, this is far from worth it.

does the shellac strenthen your nails?

Sorry, but it doesn't work that well! There is a newer product than the SHELLAC brand that I had put on. It chips just as other polish. Definitely not worth the expense. I was charged $40.00 and I would say it kept chip free for 6 days. It does definitely stay shiney with no fine scratches in it. I had it done 4 times in about 6 weeks. Once the chips and peeling starts it runs rampant. The stuff peels off much like thin rubber sheet after 5 - 6 days. Why spend the money?

I've had shellac and it didn't last. Within four days had my first chip and within one week most of it had peeled off.

The french manicure with this stuff comes out great! I won't go back to traditional polish. It actually lasts for more than 2 weeks but as your nails grow it starts to look undesirable.

Had Shellac done for my wedding mani and pedi. Wedding nails looked amaizng and didnt chip etc. However, about 10 days later because my fingernails had grown I had to have the nail polish removed. Where your nail grows and the edge of the gel starts to show it feels horrible and sharp so I paid $15 whilst on holiday to have my fingers soaked in acetone and the polish removed. It left my nails brittle, and they're still recovering. I was able to leave my toenails a lot longer as they didnt grow as fast, and bought some Shellac Remover Wraps to soak the nail with using acetone polish remover. On my smaller nails this worked fine after 20 minutes, and I was able to peel the polish off. However on my big-toes, when I peeled it off it took a layer of my actual nail with it. The nails look awful now and the surface is so rough I cant even cover it up with other polish. Have to wait till it grows out. If your nails have to look amazing, I'd get it done, but taken off as soon as possible so that it doesnt damage your nails. Otherwise - give Shellac a miss and go for normal polish.

I can do my nails with OPI and it lasts two weeks, so I'm not about to shell out that kind of money.

Must check it out. Til then, I'll continue my own fool-proof 14-day method: base/polish/topcoat, then a clear coat every 2nd or 3rd day. Lasts super long and the BEST part? It p-e-e-ls off ! No remover needed.

well, girls, I went and had one. I had a cracked nail, and had that repaired with silk wraps. I chose CherryFire Red. My hubby loves red nails, but I play piano (energetically!), and hate chipped nails, so I wouldn't do nail polish, especially red. (Acrylics are out for me!). This polish is unbelievable!! I am the WORST on painted nails-- always chipping, scraping, etc. It is WONDERFUL.
With the repair, removal of my old French manicure, and the Shellac, it cost $32. Shop around. I am in the Chicago area-- not the cheapest place....
Now, I haven't had it taken off yet...will report on that when the time comes. My husband is delighted, and so am I!!! Incidentally, I have tried all different types of nail colors over the years....haven't seen anything like this!

I just got a manicure and I paid 25.00 for a french. It is amazing...I am waiting what it will look like in a few days.

Oh, one more thing, not everyone charges rediculous prices to get a manicure and the shellac system to put on your nails. My nail person does mine for $25! Everyone that doesn't live near Morton, Illinois and has to pay $40-$45 eat your heart out!
    • DondeM  •  11 months ago
Well, I guess it must just be me because everytime I get the shellac on my nails, it seems to chip off. I thought it was chemicals that I was using to clean tar off my car or glass cleaner, but I don't even have to get near those and it chips off. Hmmmm go figure!

i am not a big fan of putting nail polish after a manicure simply because i hate nails with chipped polish. and that is what i always get hours after a manicure.i tried shellac manicure and i am truly sold. the manicure lasted for over two weeks with the polish staying shiny and intact the whole time and what more, my nails stayed strong and kept growing. the best part is after this whole long two weeks, the nails are healthy and no sign of damage. amazing. well worth the cost of the manicure and cutting your visiting time to the salon.

If you can get it off .. it would be amazing. I had one of these manicures done and it lasted well over a month - I could not get it off of my nails, not with polish remover, paint thinner, or varnish remover.. even after trying all of that - my manicure was still PERFECT. I'm in Bagram so I didn't have the luxury of the CND wraps.

I went to have my nails done asking for new tips for acrylic nails and noticed that it didn't smell like acrylic in the salon. Tammy the Stylist, Manicurist and Owner of Before and After Salon, presented Shellac to me and even asked her employees to come over and show me their nails. I was sold when she told me it would last 14 days, but had her nails lookin like they were just painted after 17. PLUS she only charged me $20, that's $15 dollars less if I had her put on acrylic nails. She just filed my nails and smoothed them out just a bit, applied a base coat, the coats for a french manicure, a top coat while placing my have under a UV lamp in between coats and took around 30 min to complete. I stuck my hand in my pocket to get my keys to leave, went home and did laundry, dishes, packed for vacation, bathed the baby and now typing this comment and my nails still look fantastic as if I just had them polished 5 min ago. You can bet I will be back to see Tammy to get my nails SHELLACed again. I am so happy that she talked me out of applying acrylic to my nails and gave me an alternative to being able to keep my nails. Thanks Tammy !!!
