Biggest Workplace Pet Peeves (Shine/Fitness Magazine Survey)

Another annoying day at the office? Are you frequently annoyed by your co-workers? You are not alone. Yahoo! Shine partnered with Fitness Magazine to survey over 2,000 women and men, and we found that a whopping 79% of employees feel aggrieved at their place of work. Chalk it up to open plan seating or recession stress, that's a lot of crankiness causing friction around the water cooler.

Workers are annoyed with both the personal behavior and the work habits of their colleagues. Topping the list among men, 41% are turned off by co-workers' body odor. Nearly as many women think their colleagues could do better in the hygiene department, about 38%. (People, there is a cure for that. It's called roll-on).

Women are most likely to be annoyed when another steals credit for their ideas. This peeve is number one on the list for 41% of all women (and 36% of men). Perhaps because younger employees are less likely to speak up for themselves on the job, 44% of 18-34 year-olds, both men and women, say this is really ticks them off.

What's another common complaint? Not surprisingly, given the lack of privacy in most workplaces, about a third of workers (33% of women and 31% of men) are irked by hearing a colleague's loud, personal telephone conversations.

According to the survey, the lunchroom is a minefield of annoying behaviors. Men and women are equally aggrieved when someone swipes their food out of the office refrigerator-27% report this is their biggest complaint. And, if you were thinking of eating that onion pizza or garlicky meatball sub on the job, perhaps you should save it for the weekend. It will seriously gross out 13% of your male and 12% of your female colleagues.

"Your mother doesn't live at the office," says Diane Gottsman, national etiquette expert. Given the level of irritation cited by workers, it's a good reminder for every one, from interns to bosses, to monitor one's own behavior on the job.

The biggest pet peeve should be employees who are alway gossiping. Along day long - blah this, blah that, blah anything, blah meaninglessness. You know who you are. Go see a shrink or try to get a life. Shut the Frick up, already.

I was in construction for 30 years. I remember how disgusting other workers were during lunch break, with their coughing and hacking and blowing snot out of their noses. I would always jump in my truck and get off the job as soon as i could. Id use a wet one to clean my hands. Grab an ice cold coke out of my ice chest and my tupperware with a ham and cheese sandwich and enjoy it by myself. Sometimes people would see that you have a cooler and ask to keep their lunch or drinks in my ice chest. They dont understand about germs and hygiene. Id tell them to buy an ice chest and fill it with ice and drinks and pack a lunch.

I don't work in an office anymore but run into all these peeves - must be human bad nature and its everywhere!!! I agree - do your work, shut your mouth and go home! My biggest peeve is all the foul language and don't think the customers can't hear it! Come on, grow up you 50 yr old bags!
    • sheree  •  Kansas City, Kansas  •  1 month 5 days ago
all of these apply to my office--small office always talk going on behind people's backs, boss buddy buddy with a couple and the rest are left out of everything, even get in trouble when they do same with others. biggest pet peeve---someone brings in treats and only give to the people they like!!!!!

my biggest pet peeve is people who come to work sick, cough and sneeze and never cover their mouths and then complain about how sick they are. STAY HOME
    • JA  •  Los Angeles, California  •  3 months ago
My biggest pet peeve is the backstabbing. There are so many people out there trying to scrape ahead by "selling out" co-workers for their own personal gain. On top of it, the boss feeds into this without going to the "source." It's pure brown-nosing! I can't stand those little S*&ts!

Join the club! I think that's, unfortunately, a common thing that happens in offices today. I'm now on my 7th job in 28 years... People trying to climb to the top and they do not care what they do to get there! However, I have learned how to throw pple right back under the bus! It's called survival! ...Sad to say, but it's true!

You ain't pooping. Even at Universities are students acting very low just like that as if to shoot down others in an attempt to bring themselves higher. And this was back in year 1999!!!! THAT is when the "economy" took a dump or the majority of people lost the financial race, not year 2007 like THEY want you to believe. See most people are not falling for the continuous lies of the media and thus the media gets them even that much more motivated to do evil as if to balance some scales of justice even though innocent people are accused to being "selfish" but in order to justify selfishness right back, as if. It just goes to show that America is not united but rather it's the dog eat dog states of America

I wish people would loosen up and laugh or take a joke and stop being so Politically Correct all of the time. Because work is stressful, sometimes boring and etc. it is nice to break the ice and tell jokes or have/poke fun..... Geeeez

my pet peeve is how management shuffles crucial away from lazy workers instead of firing them.
      • Carol 3 months ago
it can be a legal nightmare to fire someone nowadays. and all the road blocks hr puts up makes it take forever to get rid of one person, plus i end up doing hours of paperwork and hours of phone calls trying to get rid of some idiot. you can't just say "you're fired" and they leave anymore.
      • Cyndi 3 months ago
I was told by a boss, when I complained about a co-worker not doing his job, that "it's all he can handle". Seriously? that's alright? Just do not get that.
      • D 3 months ago
Carol: #$%$ The law protects companies and workplaces more than employees. In fact, so states are "at will" state, which means that the company can fire you for no reason.

We used to have a problem with people stealing other peoples lunches - UNTIL - I made some fake sandwiches for them to munch on. Peanut butter, jelly and tobassco, anyone? Or perhaps cat food/tuna sandwich with pickle juice? Stopped the food stealing, real quick.

Meetings, more meetings, and yet more meetings on why nothing is getting done. People who just like to hear the sound of their voice.

We have plenty of those boring meetings too. AND! We don't even get a #$%$ muffin or cookie either anymore. Nixed by the "economy" and we're all "lucky we have a job..." blah, blah.

Ugh.. i work in an office, but it is union also. Some young people figured out that it is really hard for our boss to do anything when they are being insubordinate.. So they just plain off refuse to do things and stand around all day talking.. And just laugh and play thru meetings.. It is soooo frustrating!!

The person who feels like they have to be in on every conversation. There is no such thing as privacy when they are around, there is nothing they don't overhear and they seem to materialize from thin air if they hear too much fun going on without them.
    • james  •  Panama City, Florida  •  3 months ago
My pet peeve is those workers who constantly complain about other co-workers.

Be on time, do your job, shut the hell up and then go home.

If everyone spent half as much time minding their own business instead of minding everyone else's, there wouldn't be nearly as much drama in the work place.

Bathroom etiquette..! Flush, put your trash in the trash, get it in the toilet, wash your hands!
How could they have left this out of this study?

    • Molly  •  3 months ago
(*laughter*) Okay, I'm going to do my "rant"...

I don't care what you eat, just chew some gum, brush your teeth or suck on mints after if you're going to be talking to other people, just for courtesy sake. If you cook fish in the microwave, I'll get over it. Trust me, my lasagna and your fish will cancel each other out.

If you eat at your desk, please clean it up. I don't need ants or roaches wandering around my little piece of corporate Hell because you can't take a minute to wipe up your crumbs.

Please bathe daily, and don't drench yourself in anything...I don't care if it's $100 a bottle or $1 a quart, too much...is too much. Less in more in the scent department.

I don't want to see your breasts, your butt cheeks or hear about how drunk you got over the weekend. And guys, PLEASE, keep your zipper up, and your hands OFF your "package". Monkeys scratch themselves anywhere and everywhere...show a little class.

Please wash your hands and flush the toilet...and if you "miss" the toilet, clean it up. I realize some toilets flush automatically, but when they don't, there's a little button you can push. Push the button if it doesn't flush automatically. Oh, paper towels and other disposable items have little baskets and bins, please use them.

If you're sick, stay home. If you can't stay home, stay away.

Please don't stand outside my cubicle-pen and chat. Take your meeting to the hall, a conference room, the bathroom, the break room or somewhere else. Maybe you don't have work to do, but I do.

I just want to come into work, do my job and go home. I don't want to listen to anyone's complaints, drama or personal issues. If you're unhappy, take it up with management, HR, your best friend or a therapist. I am none of those, and am not volunteering for the position.

Excessive messiness. Clean up after yourself! Through with your newspaper? Leave it on the break table for 3-4 days. Your food make a mess of the office microwave? Leave it and pretend someone else did it. Miss the trash can with that toss of paper? Eh, someone else will pick it up. Accidentally spill coffee grounds before reaching the filter? Maybe no one will notice if I walk away quickly. And my biggest one...let's just leave those leftovers in the fridge to see how long it takes to grow it's own legs and take itself to the trash.

The person who irritates me the most is the one who makes condescending, sarcastic remarks about EVERYTHING that everyone else in the office does, but then she turns around and makes herself sound like a saint. I can't stand that b*tch.

I read all of the comments here and I seem to have one of everyone of these petpeevers, but I think my biggest one is a boss that buddies up with some coworkers and have the the rest of the staff busting their buts while she/he sits around laughing and giggling at the tv shows they saw last night. I also have a drama queen that has to tell all of her personal business to anyone who will listen, and and another whinny coworker that thinks her whinny voice is cute, and another back biter and another one that tells everyones business, and they all chose to stand outside of my office on my busiest days. Love office work don't you :-)
