Lady Gaga's official perfume ad campaign is out, and "provocative" doesn't even begin to describe it. The ad, for her fragrance Fame, features a giant naked Gaga with tiny men crawling all over her body. Are we even slightly surprised? Keep in mind this is for a perfume that was supposedly created from samples of her blood. And Gaga has described the scent by saying, "It smells like an expensive hooker." Of course the ad is going to be out there.
But once you get over the initial shock of seeing miniature men scaling Gaga like she's Mount Everest, the advertisement is really more clever than it is gross or gratuitous. After all, the message "this perfume will have men crawling all over you" in a fragrance ad is nothing new. It's the idea behind almost every single traditional perfume campaign out there. Is Gaga poking fun at these conventional fragrance ads? Or subverting the typical sexy, good girl image for a woman not afraid to show her (in your face) desires? We think so.
It will be interesting to see how Fame stacks up against other celebrity scents, and their princess-like advertisements. Which type of woman do people want to see representing fragrances? Only time will tell.
