Put a Sock in It! (A Bun How-To)

I know, I know - I'm bun crazy!
But why wouldn't I be?

Summertime means hot, heavy hair - which only translates into one thing for me - SWEAT. And I hate being sweaty. So my go-to hairstyle is a bun.

I've heard about the "Sock Bun" for a while now, as I'm sure you have, too. Recently, a co-worker of mine came in with a lovely, thick bun. I was blown away because normally she has pretty thin hair (unless she does some back-combing, etc.). And it was super cute!

But I really didn't understand HOW she did it. In my head, I was thinking about wrapping a full sock around my bun?? It was an odd image.

But here's how you do it:

1. Comb your hair into a high ponytail. Tie as loosely or as tightly as you wish. I like to have a little volume/bump towards the front.

2. Grab an old (perhaps un-matched?) sock and cut off the foot part with fabric scissors. Depending on how thick or long your hair is, you can use more of all of the sock. I used an un-matched dress sock (rarely worn) from my boyfriend's drawer. Worked great.

3. Now, roll the sock back onto itself, creating a doughnut effect.

4. Tie the "doughnut sock" around your ponytail holder. Then, pull it up about halfway the length of your ponytail.

5.Wrap your hair around the sock circle, tucking the ends up and under. Then, roll your hair back down towards your ponytail. Pin in place.

Here's how mine turned out!

Mine is pretty messy because I'm ususally in a rush in the mornings. But you could definitely make this more formal by hairspraying down your fly-aways, or pinning a flower near the base!
