Metallic is the "it" color for spring. And while yes, metallic isn't actually a color, it's a thing: Any product that shimmers, sparkles or shines is super of the moment. But there's a caveat: Metallics aren't just for nighttime anymore; in fact, they're even chicer when worn during the day. Think of 'em as your new neutral. But pulling off a gleaming beauty look during office hours can be a bit much -- unless you apply 'em right, that is. We asked celebrity makeup artist Marni Burton (who I graduated high school with, to boot!) to spill the deets on how to shimmer without going into sparkle-overload territory.
FOR YOUR EYES
Burton recommends actually using your favorite powder bronzer as your eyeshadow instead. However, I'm loving creamy formulas that are multipurpose, like the shades in the Topshop Game On quad palette -- either way works. Use a brush or your fingertip to apply color all over the lid and into the crease. Add an element of surprise by using a shimmery lavender pencil to fill in your waterlines, smudging heavily around the inner corners of the eyes, suggests Burton. Her favorite liner? 100% Pure Pearlstick Eyeliner in Periwinkle.

FOR YOUR CHEEKS
Gleamy skin is something we can't get over -- there's just something so fresh about it. Start by using an illuminator closest to your natural skin tone -- Burton loves Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal -- and apply liberally over cheeks. Then use a blush in a similar tone, like NARS Luster, and brush into the contours of your cheeks, blending well with the highlighter for the most natural look. If you're a glow-and-go kinda girl, try Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Compact in Lilac Rose for subtle sheen that's oh so pretty.
FOR YOUR LIPS
A quick warning: Do not attempt metallic lips without conditioning your lips first -- the shimmer can pick up fine lines easily. We're partial to SunBum's latest lip balms for a quick dose of moisture and flavor. To get a glimmering lip, first trace lips with a lipliner (I just fell in love with Jennifer Bradley Best Lip Liner in Roseberry, but all her shades are great, though), then deposit some of the liner on your index finger, says Burton. Tap the color on center of lips. Then, take a high-shine matching gloss for fully sexy metallic lips. Burton loves Hourglass Extreme Sheen High Shine gloss. We do, too.
