This Is 40 — If You're Kate Moss

Our girl is all grown up today. The original waif, who we first met as an angst-ridden teen in the '90s, has come a long way from her days modeling Calvins with the artist formerly known as Marky Mark. But, considering all the time that's gone by, she really hasn't changed that much. At an age most of us consider 'middle', Moss is still the same young-blooded iconoclast from Croyden we fell in love with —  only much, much richer. Turning 40 never looked so good.

1. She made Playboy classy:
It was such a coup for them to get the then-39-year-old for the cover. What’s amazing here is Kate’s been naked a million times—it’s fashion! But still, her Playboy cover was a sensation, a collectors item even.

2. She’s had the same hair since she was 15:
Convention dictates that at 40, you need to snip your hair off into some sort of practical mom do, a no muss no fuss look, and leave the shine to the younger girls. Kate clearly says screw that.  Save for one episode of bangs and one pregnancy chop, her hair has been the same: wavering the thin line between light brown and blonde, past the shoulders, simple, and split down the middle. She either wears it straight or twists it up into a knot. Bam! That’s it.

3. She's finally settled down… with a rock star:
Her love life has been turbulent, for sure. First came top photographer Mario Sorrenti (their union was the Calvin Klein Obsession perfume campaign). Then, of course, there was her tortured romance with Johnny Depp, her affair with publishing magnate Jefferson Hack, resulting in her gorgeous daughter Lila Grace, and then that whole Pete Doherty mess.  She rose out of that, and found a man she was willing to walk down the aisle with, The Kills guitarist Jamie Hince. Their wedding was described in poetic detail in Vogue, with everyone who was anyone in rock and fashion on hand for the event. It's been a few years and they're still going strong. That's settling down, Kate-style.

4. Micro shorts are an everyday wardrobe staple:
They’re a Moss trademark! Kate’s worn micros to every major event in her life, it’s not about to stop now.

5. She’s having more fun than anyone:
Kate is, hands down, the coolest girl in the industry. When she was 18 she wrapped the fiercest fashion veteran, Naomi Campbell, around her little pinkie within minutes of meeting her. The rest of the industry ADORES her as well, and that’s a tough world. Why? She’s always laughing, always dancing, always got a glass of champagne in her hand, always telling a joke. And she's always dressed to kill.

6. Her makeup is super-low maintenance
:
If she does “makeup” she does red lipstick, and a swooping cat eye liner, enhanced by fake lashes. But just as often, you’ll catch her out and about at night with literally — look close — no makeup on. No she doesn’t always look AMAZING, but it's a really ballsy move for a woman in her profession.

7. She wears denim even better than couture:
Front and center at fashion shows, Kate wears the most ordinary wardrobe piece — jeans, a t-shirt, and a jean shirt and whoa! She just makes getting dressed look so easy, and maybe it is ... for her.

8. Billionaires she used to work for give her their private island for free to celebrate her birthday:
Know where she is right now? On Richard Branson's $500,000-a-week private island, which he gave her for her exclusive use for FREE.

9. She rarely speaks, but when she does, its pretty good advice: “Never complain, never explain.” So true, and it rhymes.

10. She doesn’t really care what people say about her: she’s been ripped to shreds in the press and in her personal life, and put herself back together again. Nothing seems to knock her out. She also walks around with a belly sticking out, without makeup, and sails right through every moment, unphased by the random hater. It’s a very good lesson.

11.Her three wardrobe staples never change: Louboutin Pigalle Heels, some leopard situation (usually a coat) and a black mini dress. Since the day she landed on the scene, girl has been wearing those three things like she invented them.

12.  She’s still the top model in the world: A title she has held for 20 years straight. Historically speaking, she is the ultimate, the one to beat for the ages. She is The One.
