From white hot to pearly sheer, here's a guide to finding the perfect shade.

1. Shimmer If you're a little apprehensive about the white nail trend, start with a shimmery shade. It will provide just a a tinge of white. And who can resist a little bit of sparkle action on the nails? (Julep Nail Vernis Kate, $14, sephora.com)
2. Sheer For those seeking a grown up, glossier look, a sheer, warm white will do. Nail expert Deborah Lippman used the shade on the models during the spring 2013 Honor show.
"Whether it's opaque or sheer, white is definitely a trend right now," Lippman told fashionista.com. "It's clean and neutral, yet bright for summer. You could wear it any time." (Deborah Lippman, Like A Virgin, $17, bigelowchemists.com)
3. Bright Show it loud and flash it proud! A bold, opaque white work on everyone, but looks exceptionally great on those with a darker skin tone. (NARS in Ecume, $19, narscosmetics.com)
4. White Hot Just as loud as a neon and infused with undertones of blue, these cool shades look great on those with pale to medium skin tones. (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Feathered, $10, sephora.com)
5. Gray Tint A perfect mix between a white and a cement colored gray, this shade may look kind of like greige putty in the bottle, but it's a great choice for those who have a medium skin tone. (OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls, $8, drugstore.com)

6. Matte For a nice, crisp finish on any skin tone, try a matte texture. To keep the color looking even when applying, do not use a transparent or shiny base coat. Instead, apply a single coat of the matte polish directly to the nail. There's no need to apply a second coat or a top coat as you don't want to ruin the matte finish. And, bonus: you'll save on time and products. (OPI Alpine Snow, $8, drugstore.com)

7. Pearl A classy way to wear white nails is with a pearl finish. It looks great on all skin tones, because of it's ability to reflect light, it's a great way to brighten up dull, sallow skin. It looks particularly lovely on pale skin. (Illamasqua Scorch, $17, sephora.com)
8. Cool A sheer shade such as this is great for a French manicure and still maintains its sheerness even when applied in two layers. Nail artist Julie Kandalec tells fashionista.com that the best way to wear this shade is to apply a ridge-filling base coast first. "Apply with more of a gliding, light-stroke - almost like floating," she said. (Essie in Waltz, $8, essie.com)
