    12 surprising sources of caffeine

    By Sarah Klein

Overworked and sleep-deprived, more people are using caffeine as an energy crutch than ever before, experts say. That's not all bad: In fact, 250 milligrams of caffeine per day-that's two to three cups of joe-wakes up the brain, improves concentration, relieves stress, and may also help you live longer. But if intake is turning into addiction, you may notice side effects , including dehydration, trouble sleeping, anxiety, an upset stomach, and even problems during prenancy.

If you're trying to cut back, you've probably already reduced the amount of coffee, tea, and sodas that you consume. But the sneaky stimulant can pop up in unexpected places. Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn't require manufacturers to list caffeine content on nutrition labels, it's often hard to tell whether a product contains the stimulant, and how much. These 12 sources of caffeine-some hidden, some just plain weird-could be giving you the jitters.

Caffeine is a drug, and so is nicotine and alcohol.

mmm okay first of all it's in the name it's not like you're unaware of it...duh read the label! lol 2nd, a cup of coffee has around 100 mg of caffeine in it, and 5-6 cups a day is needed for the antioxidant benefits. its alleged danger has been overstated because a lethal dose would be 10 grams of caffeine or 100 espressos. read the book The World of Caffeine. it will cahnge your perspective, it definitely changed mine, you should be more worried about apple seeds. apple seeds have cyanide and it only takes 50 to kill you.

Some people on here are idiots. They are so surprised jerky and sunflower seeds have caffeine in them. You idiots it's not all sunflower seeds and jerky. It's too specially made caffeine infused sunflower seeds and jerky.

The ONLY thing you mention that is a little surprising is Decaf Coffee. Did anyone really think all the caffeine was removed? Otherwise everything you list is a specialty item or energizer. Energized this and Perk me up that. Whats surprising about A stick of Beef Jerky named Perky Jerky Invigorating Beef Jerky having Caffeine in it. Or Chocolate, Energy Drinks, and Soda. You have to live on another planet not to know these things. Waste of an article.

Apparently some of you arent reading well, beef jerkey doesn't have caffine and neither does the sunflower seeds, just the stuff they listed here, the specialty items that are sold with it added as a boost. Key is moderation and stay away from the energy drinks and all the coffee. Ive known for some time that decaf doesn't mean none. It has less which helps and you can enjoy a cup every once in awhile.

Theres so many things I have to be cautious of due to my heart condition and sensitivity to caffiene so naturally I read labels and avoid most of these products.. Although not shocked by most of these I was surprised about sunflower seeds.

Many people don't like the taste of coffee, which is why they want alternative ways of getting caffeine.
