3 Ways to Knock Out Overeating

Have you ever asked yourself why you can't eat just one potato chip, especially one buffalo wing flavored potato chip dipped in creamy ranch dip? What do they put in these foods--crack?

Well, yes, sort of, according to David Kessler in his new book The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite. Kessler, a former pediatrician who was FDA Commissioner under Presidents Bush (the father) and Clinton, presents some pretty compelling research showing that food manufacturers and chain restaurants know exactly what's going to make you want to eat--and eat, and eat, and eat, and eat.

There are a few things causing this epidemic of overeating: Chemically-enhanced food that tastes good because it's high in fat, sugar, and salt; food so processed it's almost pre-chewed; food that's extremely cheap, because real ingredients, like eggs, sugar, butter, and natural flavorings have been replaced by low-cost synthetic ingredients; huge portions that are training us to eat (and expect) more; and 24-hour availability, so you can get that Panda Express Orange Chicken or those Tyson Chicken Cordon Bleu Any'tisers whenever the craving strikes.

    What's the cure?

    1. Stop snacking. Really. It's not that hard, and you'll see the benefits fast. First, you'll actually be hungry once meal time rolls around, which makes the food so much more enjoyable. Second, you will lose weight, and you'll do it without have to go on a diet. Snacking is a modern phenomenon, so just think of this as returning to your roots. (If you must snack, try this healthy yogurt option with granola, tropical fruit, and crystallized ginger.)

    2. Go cold turkey on processed foods. You'll lose your taste for them in a matter of days. Since you're not snacking any more, you don't need chips and crackers. Bake your own cookies--it's fun, and you'll know what goes into them. Keep ice cream as an occasional treat. Give up cold cereal, even the kind labeled healthy. It's not actually that healthy. Oats are healthy. Eggs are healthy. Even bacon is healthy, in moderation.

    3. Skip the chain restaurants. Read Kessler's book if you need to know why. Just realize that what you're ordering is engineered to make you eat like your belly is a bottomless pit. The wiser choice: Go out less frequently to a real restaurant where there's a chef in the kitchen who cooks real food with real ingredients, rather than assembling pre-fab dishes from frozen components.

Yes, most health experts recommend 5-6 small meals a day. But most people that follow that advice eat 5 regular 400-500 meals, not small 200 calorie meals. And regardless, no one needs to eat that often. I used to think so and did eat small meals often because I could. My schedule allowed it. It also allowed for a two hour workout 5-6 days a week. My schedule is different now. Shorter workouts, 3-4 days a week and only meals, with an afternoon snack. I have not only maintained, but lost some weight. So the 5-6 meals a day is bullshit. I eat healthier because I actually get hungry and want real healthy food, not processed "snacks". Other I know feel the same.

Well, the advice, indeed, is very good, but i think one must consider the individual metabolism, health condition and the style of life in order to decide what is good and what isn't. Any case, the processed foods and the restaurant meals should not appear on anyone’s diet too often, or rather at all!

I was hoping for some helpful information.. didn't find it here.
These 3 "tips" are useless. Saying that cold cereal is bad for you, but bacon can be healthy is ridiculous. I eat bacon, and I know it's not a great choice, but I enjoy it in moderation. Seperating food into good vs bad is just asking for trouble. Not all packaged food is bad. You need to use your head and make good decisions based on each individual food.. not lump them all together.

      geesh !

Horrible advice to stop snacking!! Most health experts recommend 5-6 small meals a day or snacks in between lunch and dinner to manage blood sugar, rev up your metabolism, and prevent binge eating.

I totally agree about the chain restaurants thing. Their food is trash and bad for you!!

When I was growing up the old saying was "no mussing or eating between meals"..
and finding someone over weight was rare. We raised most of our
food.We either played or worked till dark--None of us wanted to go inside--I know things will never be like that again--But something has to be done or our nation will never be able to pay the health care--
young kids never went to the Doctor back then--only old people.

Frequent smaller meals are good for people with fluctuating sugar levels or diabetics. I agree that fast food is usually a no-no, although if your absolutely craving it,....give into it once in a while. It will eliminate the total binge you go on trying to satisfy that craving, and usually in the end you eat what you were craving anyway. I am 44. was diagnosed with terminal metastatic cancer over 3 years ago. I went through 2 years of radiation/chemo and a huge diet change. i cut out a huge part of meat in my diet. Increased vegetables both raw and cooked. I replaced much of the meat I eliminated with legumes and small amounts of fish/chicken. I did eventually lose weight, although that was not the result I was shooting for. I am also a type II diabetic. I even went as far as to have regular hydo-colon cleanses. All in hopes to buy me more time on this earth to finish raising my 3 children. In the end, 1 1/2 years after being told I had 6 months to a year to live with little to no hope of survival rate by the Mayo Hospital, I was informed that miraculously they couldnt find ANY sign of cancer in my entire body! I was told I am a 1 in 130 miracle. I live each day as if it were my last. I continue to eat as healthy as possible while still enjoying life. If I want something I know is "BAD" I make a deal with myself to stay at the gym 30 minutes more than usual. I try not to make my diet too hard, otherwise I will give up. Its a life change,...not a temporary change. I still love sugar, and eat a steak every once in awhile. I dont beat myself up for that. I treat everyday like a new beginning, both with survivial and eating. Dont be hard on yourself! Dont make things harder than they REALLY are!

Whew! All this "Healthy Facts" crap is getting a little exhausting! One day something is good for you and the next it's ranked number one on worst foods in the WORLD! If anything, its the stress that people feel when they read this crap that has them gaining extra pounds! People please, it can be easier! You know your body better than some fitness guru. As cheesy as it sounds, get in touch with your own mind and you'll slowly realize what works for your body type and what doesn't. Health is SO importnat, but stressing over the lattest diet fads is DEADLY! Live a little, laugh a lot, and somewhere in between that: eat as healthy as possible (for you) and excercise! Cheers all you sexy people!
