Americans only eat about half the amount of fiber that they're supposed to. No bueno, because fiber is super-important in helping regulate blood pressure and blood sugar, it aids in weight loss, and, yes, keeps your colon nice and clean (yoinks!). But guess what? You can get your fiber from some very surprising, very tasty, sources. You'll never believe these snacks.
So you've got to get at least 25 grams of fiber (some experts suggest more!) a day. But banish all thoughts of sawdust-flavored bran! You get lots of the stuff through foods like fruits, beans, and whole grains, but you can pick up a few good grams here and there through some unexpected sources, too. Check it out:
1. Sweet potato pie. A piece of this pie packs 2 grams of fiber-about 8 percent of your recommended daily allowance.
2. Corn tortilla. There are nearly 3 grams of fiber in one of these guys. You can even add fresh veggies and a drizzle of salsa for extra nutrients.
3. Häagen-Dazs Fat Free Chocolate Sorbet. Two grams of fiber in a sweet half-cup scoop of this treat.
4. Boca Cheeseburger. Four grams of fiber in one of these patties.
5. Mixed nuts. One ounce is about 2.5 grams of fiber, plus protein.
Not to sound grandma-ish, but are you getting your fiber? Is it something you think about? If so, what's your favorite fibrous snack?
