    5 Mouth-Watering Wedding Cake Alternatives

Maybe you're not a fan of cake. Or maybe you love cake so much that you can't choose just one type. Whatever the reason, couples today are looking beyond the traditional wedding cake when it comes to choosing reception desserts. Here, five options we love.

    Cupcakes

Cupcakes are a fun alternative to wedding cake. And they have a real advantage when it comes to picky eaters: You can mix and match a wide variety of flavors so that there's something for everyone.

Another plus: Cupcake towers become instant décor and focal points of your reception room. "We typically work closely with the event coordinator to create something cohesive to the overall theme through color, aesthetic and quantity," says Jenine Cravatt, president of Cupcakes Couture of Manhattan Beach, CA. "This includes not only designing the desserts in a specific color and design, but also incorporating props, linens and stationery pieces that fit in with the overall feel of the wedding."

    Ice Cream

Guests of all ages will love a make-your-own-sundae bar. Splurge on gourmet ice cream for a truly memorable dessert. We love Cowabunga Ice Cream (and not just because of the name!), which is based out of New Jersey and ships nationally. Their secret recipe ensures that the ice cream isn't over-aerated, resulting in creamier, denser ice cream than the competition. Their inspired flavors include New York Cheesecake, Cake Batter, Rice Krispy Treat (vanilla ice cream with marshmallows and rice krispies), Almond Joy (coconut ice cream with almonds and dark chocolate chips), and Red Velvet.

    Dessert Shots

These delectable treats are as beautiful as they are delicious! Choose varieties like strawberry shortcake, chocolate mousse, New York cheesecake, key lime pie… any dessert you'd like can be turned into a dessert shot. Create an impressive arrangement of dessert shots on a side table with 3 or 4 varieties. Guests will love how easy they are to eat while walking compared to a slice of cake on a plate. These creations are from the lovely ladies at Cupcakes Couture.

What about the bride who doesn't like cake, cup cakes, ice cream, mousse or pie? Am I just SOL lol?

It would be nice to have a small cake to do the traditional cake cutting plus whatever different kinds of wedding desserts you want! At least, that's what I want for my wedding. I really love the upscale cupcakes though. Much easier to make, and much easier to distribute :) The ice cream idea is cute but too high maintenance for me.

We did a cupcake tower and a small cake top, just to cut. People loved the cupcakes because it was less intimidating than a huge slice of cake. Plus they were fun to eat! We also served gelato in martini glasses at the end.

How can you hate on cupcakes?!!? Cupcakes rock. I think they're great at weddings because you can have a bunch of different kinds.

I live in Pittsburgh, where cookies tables are quite popular...A wedding I recently attended had white chocolate mousse right after dinner, cookie table all night, and slices of cake set out an hour after the mousse was done...YUM!

We did cupcakes with a 10 inch cake to cut and put the topper on. It also was not filled, given the guests options if they didn't want filling as the cupcakes all had it.

Why do these have to be for a wedding when they look like they'll be great for any kind of party?

My husband and I just got married and did cupcakes. We had a very small serving cake to put the cake topper on and to cut, then had a whole bunch of different flavored cupacakes. That was my favorite part - with cupcakes you can have a ton of different flavors - something for everyone!

While the other four were a LITTLE more creative, CUPCAKES was the first on the list. Almost didn't keep reading. Really....Cupcakes? So boring...let's get over this cupcake trend and MOVE ON!

You wouldnt have to cut the cake, but you could feed each other mini cupcakes.

Does this mean you need to skip the traditional cake-cutting at the reception? Cutting a cupcake together doesn't quite do it. These desserts are great but I'd have to have a cake!

Minty Me22, not at all, you could always order a small cake and still have the other desserts so it's a win, win situation :)

How about all of them + a cake? Sounds like a good wedding to me :)
