    8 Creative Thanksgiving Side Dishes

Julie Grice is a blogger who shares her wisdom with us at SheSpeaks.

If I were a completely traditional cook, our Thanksgiving table would be filled with turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes and stuffing. For dessert, we'd have pumpkin or pecan or apple pie. The thing is, I'm not a traditional cook. I'm not planning on doing anything completely "out there" for the holiday, but I do like adding fun or creative twists to liven up the appetizers, sides and desserts. For instance, I'll be roasting brussels sprouts in maple syrup for a touch of sweetness and simmering squash in browned butter. Instead of pumpkin pie, I'll be making pumpkin cake (though that is largely because my husband's birthday falls on Thanksgiving this year).

Where is your dinner going to fall on the traditional versus unique Thanksgiving dinner spectrum? If you're in the middle or close to the traditional end, try one of these classic side dishes with a twist.

Caramelized Onion Mashed Potatoes from Daily Garnish.

I served these potatoes at Thanksgiving last year, and they were a hit. Emily also provides great step-by-step instructions and photos for caramelizing onions.

Pan-Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Brown Butter and Toasted Pecans from How Sweet It Is.

Pretty much any vegetable is delicious when roasted and topped with brown butter. Even vegetable haters are sure to love this one!

Butternut Squash, Ricotta and Sage Crostini from Shutterbean.

This crostini would make for the perfect appetizer for guests to much on while you put the finishing touches on the gravy and turkey.

Greens with Almonds and Raisins from Savvy Eats.

Wilted collard greens or kale are complemented by sweet plump raisins and toasted almonds. Let's face it, you need a healthy (yet delicious) side to balance out that pie, don't you?

Quinoa Salad with Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Kale, Dried Cranberries and Red Onion from Two Peas and Their Pod.

Make this flavorful quinoa salad for any of your vegetarian guests. They'll love it.

Spicy Cranberry Sauce with Pinot Noir from Simply Recipes.

I'm not big on cranberry sauce, but I may just need to give this wine and spice-infused version a try.

Swiss Chard and Sweet Potato Gratin from Smitten Kitchen.

The best thing about this gratin? You can make it a day in advance. Just stick it in the oven and gently reheat it for an hour right before dinner.

Twice-Baked Bourbon Hazelnut Sweet Potatoes from A Spicy Perspective.

Another great make-ahead dish. And I'd definitely take a twice-baked sweet potato with bourbon and hazelnuts over a sweet potato casserole anyday.

What's your favorite Thanksgiving side? Do you go for more traditional or creative holiday meals?

Anyone think of anything like a green veggie...besides green beans, but not brussel sprouts. The family won't touch them.

How about frozen peas in butter and some fresh cracked black pepper to taste? If not in butter maybe a little alfredo sauce with shredded cheese?
      • Sharon 6 months ago
        Or maybe a pea salad.

My Mom, God rest her sole, made woderful giblet gravy. Anyone know how it's made? Nothing I ever eat taste like Mom's though, I guess because the main ingredient in everything she fixed was just plain oldfashioned Love!!! Please give thanks for everthing and everyone in your life because if one person you love goes away , things are never quite the same. Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless.

make a roux out of oil and flour and stir until brown, then add chicken broth, a tablespoon of dressing and a chopped boiled egg. let cook about 3 minutes to cook the flour. salt and pepper to taste. good. or you could thin down a can of cream of chicken soup. use milk to thin the soup to your consistency.

Use the turkey or chicken broth from baking the bird. Take the neck, gizzard, heart and liver and boil them until done (the liver will be done first). Remove meat from neck; chop neck meat, gizzard, heart & liver. You will also need some hard boiled eggs. Put the broth into a pan and bring to boil. Using corn starch as a thickener, thicken the broth and then add the chopped meats and the hard boiled eggs.

I have had turkey giblet gravy all my life and have never heard of adding hard boiled eggs. What is the point? I like my gravy smooth.

same here, this is the favorite meal my family likes every year and they don't want any change to it, i agree with them and you. happy thanksgiving.

What about candied carrots? You know fresh baby carrots cooked in butter and dark brown sugar. I only make it for the holidays. So it might not be too healthy but still with fresh washed carrots it is a perenial favorite.

Hey, ME, How about broccoli, asparagus, peas or a fresh spinach salad?
      • Annie'smom 6 months ago
hi ME, we love a spinach salad with cranberries and almonds/pecans and mandarin oranges in it. Make a hot bacon dressing with Italian dressing with a shot of bacon grease. Well , you didn't think it was going to be TOO healthy did you??

Yuck! I am convinced taste buds have been destroyed by the wine guzzling.

Best side dish I ever got for Thanksgiving was a cake Ma baked for me back in 98. How Ma made that hacksaw fit in the cake I'll never know. Thanks Ma!

      How about cole slaw?

For some that LOVES pretty much every vegetable,Green bean casserole has got to be one of the worst side dishes that Durkee created so people would buy the onion rings. It looks and tastes like someone already chewed it and vomited it into a dish. It looks gross and tastes even worst. How about this easy green bean dish that I make. A couple cans of green beans drained, about 2 tablelspoon of olive oil to coat, equal parts of seasoned bread crumbs and parmesean cheese About 1 cup total.and good healthy shake of garlic powder. Mix all together and put in oven ntil warm. Now thats a good green bean casserole. You can even throw some onion ring on top. GREEN BEANS SHOULD NOT SWIM IN MUSHROOM VOMIT

How about something creative to do with the turkey recipe?
    • Freedomson  •  6 months ago
My favorite "salad" treat is made using strawberry jello, strawberries, and sour cream. Fill a glass pie plate with half of the liquid jello and strawberries. Chill until set. Spread sour cream over the set jello leaving half an inch border. Pour the remaining liquid jello with strawberries over the sour cream. Chill to set. Cut wedges and serve on a lettuce leaf. MMMMMM!
    • Lynn Brown  •  6 months ago
thanks . Anything with sweet potatoes in the recipe is great. Not to mention bourbon and hazelnuts .

My favorite food during that special day is please give me some rice ("arroz con gandules") and/or beans, a piece of turkey or "pernil" (roast pork or a pork chop), cranberry sauce, a little salad and for dessert I love a piece of apple pie, pecan pie or pumpkin pie. I am not into big fancy dinners. There is always a lot of waste! Make it simple. Always say a simple prayer and don't forget to include our familes, those who don't have one and those who are not longer with us!

my daughter loves mashed potatoes and will try this recipe and make my own gravy. thanks
    • snyderst80  •  6 months ago
i was mistaken; "gratin" is from the french "gratter"-to scrape.
    • Willie Matinpour  •  6 months ago
You could add manna from Heaven to brussel sprouts and they will never taste good. They aren't little cabbages--they are boiled rats. Yuck!!
    • snyderst80  •  6 months ago
you guys have no sense of humor.

Pan-roasted brussels sprouts? There is nothing, I repeat, NOTHING anyone could do to a brussels sprout that would make them even remotely edible. Blech. And what the hell is a quinoa anyway? Give me REAL food please. Mashed potatoes and giblet gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole. I also agree with the "salad" being of the Jello, sour cream and fruit variety. Dessert is the only thing I might be "out there" about. Apple pie is probably my least favorite. I have to make my Gooseberry Meringue Pie, and I prefer my Pumpkin Cheese Pie over the traditional version. I also love my Brownie Pecan Pie, or Black-bottom Lemon Pie. Yum! **drools**
