8 fast food burgers that won't blow your diet

Forget about lettuce-wrapped soy patties (but just for right now!). Today we're talking about "real" burgers -- all-beef patties on bread buns. After looking at nutritional information for 15 popular chain restaurants that serve burgers, we've compiled a list of picks -- the best of the worst, if you will -- courtesy of your pal Hungry Girl...

    Wendy's Jr. Cheeseburger

PER SERVING (1 cheeseburger with ketchup, mustard, pickles, and onion): 270 calories, 11g fat, 690mg sodium, 26g carbs, 1g fiber, 6g sugars, 15g protein

Think a real cheeseburger is totally off limits? Not if you go for this pick. It's not the largest cheeseburger on the block, but it's sure to kick your craving to the curb. And for under 300 calories, this burger is totally guilt-free. Way to go, Wendy's!

    Burger King's Whopper Jr.

PER SERVING (1 burger with lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, mayo, and ketchup): 340 calories, 19g fat, 510mg sodium, 28g carbs, 2g fiber, 6g sugars, 14g protein

This burger has creamy mayo, yet clocks in with some decent stats. Of course, BK's slogan is "Have it your way," so you'll be glad to know your burger will only have 260 calories and 10g fat if you skip the mayo. Nice!

    McDonald's Hamburger

PER SERVING (1 burger with pickles, onion, ketchup, and mustard): 250 calories, 9g fat, 520mg sodium, 31g carbs, 2g fiber, 6g sugars, 12g protein

You can't do better than a real hamburger for 250 calories and less than 10g fat. It's nothing fancy, but it hits the spot. Not to mention the regular Cheeseburger has just 300 calories and 12g of fat. Not too shabby, Mickey D's!

    In-N-Out Hamburger

PER SERVING (1 burger with grilled onion and spread): 390 calories, 19g fat, 650mg sodium, 39g carbs, 3g fiber, 10g sugars, 16g protein

For those of us on the West Coast or in Texas, you know we can't talk about burgers without mentioning In-N-Out (so delicious!). And we'd be doing you a total injustice if we didn't give you stats for a burger with grilled onion and that famous thousand-island-like spread. Good news: You can have both on your burger for under 400 calories and 20g of fat. YAY!

More from Hungry Girl: A salad inspired by this burger!

    Red Robin's Natural Burger

PER SERVING (1 burger with onion, pickles, tomatoes, and lettuce): 569 calories, 24g fat, 989mg sodium, 51g carbs, 3g fiber, 9g sugars, 37g protein

Notice how we haven't mentioned sit-down restaurants until now? That's because we were both shocked and saddened to learn that the majority of restaurant burgers top the 1,000-calorie mark and have more than 50g of fat. YIKES! If you absolutely have your heart set on a restaurant burger, Red Robin seems to offer your best bet. But even so, the stats aren't good -- just take a look. For that amount of calories, you could order a Big Mac from McDonald's.

    White Castle's Original Slider

PER SERVING (1 slider with mustard, pickles, and onion): 140 calories, 6g fat, 360mg sodium, 13g carbs, 1g fiber, 1g sugars, 7g protein

If you're not starving and just want authentic burger taste, then White Castle is probably your best bet. Why? Because you can order the Sliders (mini burgers) individually. Even the Bacon Jalapeno Cheeseburger Slider has only 190 calories and 12g of fat. Hooray for mini burgers!

    Five Guys' Little Hamburger

PER SERVING (1 burger, without toppings): 480 calories, 26g fat, 380mg sodium, 39g carbs, 2g fiber, 8g sugars, 23g protein

This burger chain has been getting a lot of attention ever since the President ate lunch there. Good pick, Mr. President! The Little Burger options (which are still pretty large, in our opinion) definitely lessen the nutritional blow. We were also excited to see that these burgers have the most impressive sodium counts (just 380mg for the Little Hamburger). Good to know!

    The Counter Custom Built Burgers

For control freaks like us, this burger chain is heaven because everything is so insanely customizable. We're not going to tell you to order anything specific off the menu -- just use the nutritional information the restaurant provides online to see what crazy combos you can come up with that still have reasonable stats. Don't you love a challenge?!

I read an article describing the parts of a cow that are actually used in fast food burgers: the stomach, intestines and other disgusting parts mixed with cuts of meat that you wouldn't even feed to your dog. Then they treat it with ammonia to kill the bacteria. The Whopper - now with 10% more #$%$ Sounds appetizing, doesn't it?

I happen to like offal. Up until just after WWII those parts were considered delicacies, not "disgusting parts". There is a lot of flavor to be had from those parts. You have no idea what you're missing.

Sure, if you want to describe the worlds worst burger joint where other than the extremely bland patty being prepared and placed on a reg bun you have to literally dress it yourself after waiting forever before its even ready. I dont expect you to understand tho seeing that you are from up north where bland, flavorless foods are common stomping ground.

Dane Dane Dane what ever gave you the mistaken idea i was a northerner and to correct you on a point of order northern food is all of southern food minus one thing a deep fat fryer. The northern cook has gotten lousy press just because we do not brag , we just cook every European ,African ,Hispanic, and pan Asian cuisine there is flawlessly. That includes creole and cajun . So crawl back to your moms basement and gnaw on some road kill jerky "there's some good gnawin there!".

When joe horn, NFL wide receiver, was interviewed a while back and asked what he could not live without even for one week he states "a big fat juicy cheeseburger". The point is as long as you exercise you easily indulge in these types of foods from time to time.

The quesadilla burger should top choice! Boca is delicious, higher protein, &
lower in fat.I am 1/2 American Indian, since childhood I ate only wild game my
Dad would catch or fish.Dad did not make much back then.So we had to live
off the land as our people would always do.He had a garden but would supplement
      with ramps,slicks,& branch lettuce.
      Kudos to you Applebee's!

      Is the author retarded?

Gee...let's see...be on a diet, what hamburgers are best for a diet?

      The SMALL ONES!

I think anybody could of thought, gee, let's take the cheapest, smallest burgers on the menu and say they are the best for diets.

Pretty much every burger they mentioned you need to eat four of to get close to full. (and I'm not even a big eater)

Transfats and mayo and salt~oh my!

Everything in moderation people. All this food fright gets a little tiresome. A good juicy cheeseburger is not going to destroy your body if it is not a staple in your diet. I had my share of fast food when I was a kid and obesity in kids was pretty much unheard of then. The answer is to get out there and run, play, and turn off the TV & computers.

Some fast food options are better than others, but it will never be health food. If I get fast food I usually skip the fries and get a diet (instead of regular) soda, then maybe have a yogurt or piece of fruit on the side. Even the lightest burger is still pretty heavy. However, you can't beat the convenience factor. I don't think it's that bad to eat junk every now and again as long as it's not a daily habit.

In-n-Out, is not about to wake up! Keep going to Carl's, they won't miss you at In-n-Out, trust me!

I LOVE 5 Guy's Burgers and Fries. You don't need the have the burger because the regular is two beef patties. Best burger I have ever had in a fast food restuarant. Note* Fries are awesome! A regular order can be shared by 2 people with not much of a fight. They give you extra fries with the order.
      • A Yahoo! User 4 months ago
ya ikr my dad gets 2 regular fries for the our whole family of five and they put in like 200 extra fries plus there AMAZING!!!!!!

Eat a decent double bacon cheeseburger, enjoy yourself, and diet with something else. Skimping on fat and salt and taste is not the thing to do with burgers. If you have to, eat fewer of them but enjoy the ones you eat.
