    8 rainbow-colored foods: a photo essay

Photo From I Am MommyPhoto From I Am Mommy

Nutrition experts recommend eating a colorful diet for a healthy lifestyle. They are, of course, referring to naturally colored foods-berries, oranges, lemons, spinach, etc. But these rainbow foods are much more fun and exciting! I won't condone cooking with unlimited amounts of synthetic food dye, but I can condone unlimited looking at it! Now, on to the essay...

    1. Rainbow Pancakes from I Am Mommy have been making their way around the Web. And, did you know this week is National Pancake Week?

    2. Some bakers bake layered Rainbow Cakes, but I prefer this bright and swirly version from Omnomicon.

    3. Where there's cake, there's cupcakes...specifically, Rainbow Cupcakes from Delicious Delicious Delicious. Can it be my birthday already?

    4. Kids (and adults, too, who am I kidding?) get a kick out of Rainbow Cookies. From Dinner Cakes.

    5. By far the healthiest option on this list, these Rainbow Wraps from Healthy. Happy. Life. get their color the old-fashioned way-from fruit!

    6. Here's another take on Rainbow Cookies, this time using a rainbow of mini M&M's.

    7. And a third...(from Rainbow Stuff).

    8. Finally, adorable Rainbow Cupcakes from Abbey Goes Design Scouting. These remind me of a new box of crayons!

Have you ever made rainbow food? How do you add color to your diet?

Are these really okay? Don't get me wrong, I love red velvet cupcakes, but how healthy is something so saturated in color? And (because I have a bake sale coming up and think these look so tasty) are there any safe food colorings to use in the amounts seen above? Perhaps an organic or natural version?

Except for the fruit wrap, I wouldn't put any of these anywhere near my mouth.....or my grandkids' mouths. Might send some to the ex, though.

You are right girls....these are loaded with dyes. You don't want your kids eating those.

if you're eating any kind of hard candy, many kinds of processed pickles, and countless varieties of other processed food you're already getting food dye in your diet. I'm not an expert, but check the label on processed foods, Red 40 abounds. I think it's ok for most people (some are allergic) in small quantities, and I avoid processed foods like the plague, so I could probably eat a few of these w/o death and destruction!

Love your reply GretchenW! Most people these days need to get a grip on reality, settle down, and relax once in awhile. So many "fun suckers" these days and it gets really old!

There are natural food dyes available, ladies, you just need to look for them.

Oh, good golly. It's a few small drops PER cake. I've made rainbow cakes before. Divide the cake up into 24 cupcakes and the amount of dye an individual get is only measurable by a microscope.

The world would be a happier place if sourpusses would unclench their jaws and unpucker their bottoms. There is no grand conspiracy to ruin health with rainbow cakes.

Yeah, AC, the only thing not full of chemicals and dyes and crap is the fruit tray. Not that I wouldn't eat one of those cookies, but it's totally loaded with dyes.

To know the true glory of the rainbow cupcake, you have to see the inside! Check out this vegan one made by Fat Bottom Bakery: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/ihiuYHGhBUKGz6HIF2KQ7A?select=T36XQuzQy8B7thkaTklXUQ
