Appetizer alert: Orders that serve up 1,000+ calories before the main course

Here are a few restaurant appetizers with less than appetizing nutritional stats, plus some better-for-you choices from Hungry Girl!

Outback Steakhouse: Alice Springs Chicken Quesadilla

    2,140 calories & 132 grams of fat!

By now, most people know to stay clear of the Bloomin' Onion, a.k.a. the tower of fried terror. But did you know that's NOT the worst appetizer on the menu? This quesadilla is! Even if you share it with three pals, it will cost you 535 calories and 33g of fat. Ouch! Instead of swallowing this monstrosity before dinner is even served, opt for the Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie -- the entire plate has just 315 calories.

Craving a quesadilla without excess fat and calories? Click here for HG's Cheesy-Good Chicken Quesadilla recipe!

    Chili's: Texas Cheese Fries

    1,940 calories & 133 grams of fat!

We don't care that this starter is supposed to be split with others. Any pre-dinner item that has nearly 2,000 calories is just WRONG! Even a so-called "half order" clocks in with 1,450 calories and 104g of fat. In fact, none of the appetizers at Chili's have less than 700 calories. We suggest you skip the appetizers altogether and go for a cup of Chicken & Green Chile soup -- with 100 calories and 4g fat, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Want a swap for those fries that won't give you a heart attack? Try our Ranch-tastic Butternut Fries with Bacon!

    The Cheesecake Factory: Guacamole Made-To-Order

1,608 calories & 21 grams of saturated fat!

Think you're making a smart choice by going for guacamole as opposed to something fried? Think again! Sure, avocado has good fat, but this version has a whopping 1,608 calories. Even the Fried Macaroni and Cheese there doesn't have as many calories! A MUCH better idea is to order the edamame, for 323 calories. Or get the Chicken Pot Stickers for a reasonable 377 calories. Crisis averted!

Pssst... Over here! This guacamole recipe will make your day!

P.F. Chang's: Sichuan Chicken Flatbread (with Sauce and Asian Slaw)

    1,260 calories & 89 grams of fat!

How bad can a chicken flatbread be? Poultry is good for you, and SKINNY bread can't be all that dangerous, right? Think again! One-fourth of this appetizer will cost you more than 20g of fat! Instead, order the steamed shrimp dumplings, which have 45 calories each and no fat. And the dipping sauce (if you use the entire small bowl) has only 15 calories. Perfect!

this is all a bunch of bu..ll..sh..it... What makes you gain weight is mostly due to carbohydrates!!!! I'm sick of reading these articles! Educates yourselves! Read the book why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes and you will understand what I am talking about!

How in the heck do these restaurants fit THAT many calories into a stinkin' appetizer??? It's so ridiculous and COMPLETELY unnecessary! *sigh*

I am a bit skeptical of some of the others too.

I have a hard time believing the quesadilla thingajob has that many calories in it. A tortilla is 200 calories even if it's big arse large one. 4 oz chicken breast is only about 230 calories with no skin and an ounce of cheese is just 110 calories. That's 530 so far or maybe say 640 with two ounces of cheese. A whole carton of sourcream still wouldn't make up the difference between 500 and 2140. Where are the rest of the calories coming from??

What we eat ,drink or smoke is a matter of choice no one is forcing you to go to these places to eat, So the so called health experts tells us this stuff and hurt the places that serve the food on there menus in a already bad economy. If I want to eat a 2000 plus calorie plate of food then I will its my choice and the right of the resturant to serve it.People should worry about their personal freedom to choose being taken away by Goverment and interest groups . Worry about yourselfs and tune out the propaganda.

Articles like this I guess are helpful but when I go out to dinner it is a treat. I am going to order what I want and skimp the rest of the day or maybe exercise a little more. Most people should be pretty well aware if something is fried or saucy it is going to be high in calories and fat and choose for themselves. Not have a restaurant nazi do it for them. Life is too short as it is.

When i go out to eat we want to have fun and not worry about calories. Who cares if something that tastes good is a little bad for you. Make up for it the next day. If whomever your with is going to leave you if you put on a pound or 2 get a higher paying job and they will stay ( or kick them out, you don't need someone like that).

Honestly, an appetizer is meant to be shared with many. Of course if you take the calorie count of a dish meant for 4+ people it is going to be high. I have a family of 7, I guarantee the calorie count of my dinner total is 5000+. I guess if you normally eat a whole appetizer by oneself, then yea, but then again that person is most likely not on a diet.

It's not what we eat, it's how much of what we eat! I'll have the french fries for two , please. Yeah I'm alone , why?
    • Mr. Disappointed  •  1 year 2 months ago
WHAT? You're kidding me - menu items that involve cheese and frying are high in calories?!?!

Maybe it's as obvious to us as it is that most of these "articles" are worthless.

Perhaps you could earn your keep and tell us instead what we SHOULD eat? It's easy enough to point out the items that are obviously fattening.

It's O.K. to eat these things--Just not everyday.

Many times individuals take 1 instance, magnify it until it distorts, then publicize it hoping this "breaking news" will bring them publicity. While not only inaccurately portraying others is innapropriate, it also reveals the character of the indivdual ( we all know and avoid people like this unless they are on tv evidently ) who is simply seeking the attention of the uber-naive consumer, who in turn distort the distorted image even more.

I eat everything on that list every single day, and i might say wow its good not to mention every other unhealthy food i can get my hands on.
    • MELISSA M  •  1 year 2 months ago
The key is, that this is an apetizer. You are only meant to eat a small portion. I think Eat This Not That should look at what they recommend as a portion before they label something that bad, which they rarely do.

Some of you guys don't know what you're talking about!! I used to work for Outback and they make everything from scratch with fresh ingredients. Healthy entrees and appetizers would not be more expensive, they would be cheaper, because you would use less cheese and less butter. They don't make high fat food to offend you, they make it because it tastes good!!!
