Best Eggnog to Buy (and the Worst)

See which eggnog brands ranked highest in our taste test, and which are better left on the supermarket shelf
As much as we applaud your good-intentioned enthusiasm in wanting to make everything yourself this holiday season, when it comes to items like eggnog, there's no shame in turning to the supermarket for help.

Although it's not difficult to make at home, eggnog is one of those products that is easy to check off your shopping list. The only hitch? Making sure you pick the right brand. Reach for the wrong carton in your dairy aisle and you might wind up with something that tastes more like thin, banana-bubblegum-flavored milk, rather than that creamy, lightly spiced drink you were anticipating.

Knowing that "added stress" wasn't on your Christmas wish list, eight Daily Meal editors tested popular eggnog brands to see which are best (and which you might want to leave on the supermarket shelf). Our taste test criteria? We considered texture (does it have the desired creamy thickness?), flavor (is there a hint of holiday spices?), color (is it more yellow or white?), and level of sweetness (not too cloying, please). What's more, we conducted a second round of testing that mixed in a little dark spiced rum to help determine which tasted best with a spirited addition.

Check out the results below - the brands are listed best to worst (scores are based on a 100 point scale).

Egg nog is amazing! Good thing they only make it during christmas or I'd probably die of a heart attack at 35.

I actually find horchata tastes almost indistinguishable from eggnog and probably is lower calorie. Lots of my friends spike it with rum or brandy and use it the same way!
      • Ray C 5 months ago
H, to me horchata has a rice-like taste.

You got that right! I'd LIVE on it if I could.....
    • Lady Lynnea  •  Youngstown, Ohio  •  5 months ago
So if you happen to live in Ohio, none of these brands are available unless you maybe live in Cleveland!! I've never ever heard of most of these. How about reviewing regular grocery store brands!

Ohio is a 4 letter word my dear. That's why nothing good comes out of ohio

turkey hill is sold at kroger, but imo none of these can possibly be better than plain ol kroger brand
      • timetravler 5 months ago
I only heard of 2 of these brands. Not only that, I don't consider silk even in the same catagory. If it isn't made with dairy, it is not egg nog.
    • VirginiaH  •  5 months ago
Looks like the brands were either west coast or east coast available, yet again forgetting, overlooking and ignoring the central part of the US! Braum's eggnog and eggnog ice cream are tops!
      • Ray C 5 months ago
Actually, I can find Hood and Southern Comfort brands at Oklahoma and Texas Krogers.
      • VirginiaH 5 months ago
I don't shop Krogers. But it is nice to know that two of the brands might be available in this area. I stand by Braums though. They have truly good eggnog.

I have only heard of the Southern Comfort brand....

Why do you even list the fat? What fun are the holidays if you are worried about how many calories are in everything?

$6.99 for a quart? How STUPID can you BE to pay $ 28 per gallon of that stuff?
    • Tosh  •  5 months ago
They shouldn't even judge Silk in the same category--it's soymilk. Of course soymilk doesn't taste as good as the milk version!
    • WarrenP  •  St Paul, Minnesota  •  5 months ago
So what's the point of "best of" if almost all these brands are regional????
      Thanks for nothing as usual.
    • me  •  5 months ago
I prefer Kroger brand eggnog myself.
    • William S  •  Reno, Nevada  •  5 months ago
I've only heard of two of those brands. Southern Comfort and Trader Joes. Where was this test taken? Are the other brands nation wide or regional to where the test was done? This should also be said when showing test results.

    • Jerry  •  Gig Harbor, Washington  •  5 months ago
8 eggs, 1 cup sugar, 3 ounces meyers dark rum, 1/5 bourbon, 1 pint heavy cream, 1 quart milk. Yum! Yum!!!

Prairie Farms Egg Nog in by far the best, Deans is 2nd. This article as per usual has a East Coast bias.
    • Jess  •  5 months ago
I really like the silk egg nog. Regular eggnog is a bit too thick so it grosses me out, but silk isn't thick at all, and the flavor is great!
    • Old Geezer  •  5 months ago
I vote for Darigolds Classic Eggnog. $4.68 for a half gallon! But you can add Gold Rum to half of any of them and they all taste GREAT!
