Dine-and-Dashers Jump from 55th Floor

They changed into parachutes in the bathroomWell, that's one way to do a dine-and-dash: Four men decided to do a BASE jump off Melbourne's Rialto Towers after drinks at the Vue de Monde restaurant. The catch? The restaurant is on the 55th floor of the 823-foot-tall Australian building.

According to restaurant owner Shannon Bennett, the four men ordered Negroni cocktails at the Lui Bar, went to the bathroom, changed into their parachutes (which were hidden in their suits), headed for the balcony, and jumped without paying.

The men landed and got into a getaway car, escaping before anyone could catch them. An archived version of Lui Bar's menu shows that a Negroni costs some 20 Australian dollars (about $21 US), which means the daredevils ran out on a check worth at least $84. The identities of the men are still unknown.

"It was just too late, they were just really quick at what they were doing, it was just very well planned and they've obviously done this sort of stuff before," Bennett told the Herald Sun. "They had cameras on their helmets so I'm sure we'll all see it on YouTube pretty soon."

Of course not everyone has gotten away with running the check.

A first date ended poorly last year after a South Florida couple decide to dine and ditch the check at a local T.G.I. Friday's. Of course, being teens, their escape was poorly planned, with one person setting off the fire alarm when he tried the fire exit.

Another group of men were caught after running out on a $300 check of booze, food, and dessert. They would've gotten away with it, but one man tried to enter a giveaway contest by leaving his address, email, and three phone numbers, right next to the unpaid bill.

Even Sixth Sense actor Gary Collins was caught running out on a check early last year, allegedly leaving a $59.35 check unpaid at a Mississippi inn. He refused to pay the tab even after employees followed him to his car, so he was arrested at home and held on $5,000 bond.

Of course, if you want to get away with grubbing and snubbing the check (sans daredevil jumps), Yelp has a whole section on dine-and-dash tactics, as well as The New Times. Not that we're suggesting you should; restaurant workers don't get paid much.
