    Ditch your diet soda addiction

I'm addicted to Diet Coke. I love the taste, the lack of calories and how it satisfies a serious 11 am void that no coffee or food can fill. Every time I crack a can, I feel joy but also a sense of "Ick!" What the &^%* am I putting into my body? I heard my co-worker mention that among other things, Diet Coke will "pickle your innards." Fantastic. What's worse? Studies are now showing that Diet Coke can actually make you gain weight. I'm finally determined to nip this habit in the bud, but it's not easy with Yahoo! free soda vendors in every kitchenette. Oy!

Hungry Girl just posted a blog entitled: 4 Ways to ditch your diet soda dependancy. She suggests:

    1. Stevia Sweetened Soda
    2. Metromint Water
    3. Zenergize Vitamin Infused Drink Tabs
    4. POM Light Tea
    [-HungryGirl]

I've also heard that seltzer is a great replacement. It has a similar burn (diet coke addicts know what I'm talking about here) but doesn't pickle your innards;)

Are you addicted to DC? Have you kicked the habit? Share your diet-soda-ditching devices or professions of love. It's a tough one and we are all in this together.

Don't forget that ALL carbonated drinks deplete the calcium in your bones. This is important to all but especially women (osteoporosis).

OMG I forgot about that - and diet coke is great for taking the acid buildup off battery posts. What have I been doing? I knew it but couldn't get off the soda. I am going to google aspertame side effects. I know its gonna be scary.

I was completely hooked on Tab (before the days of Diet Coke)and then DC. It wasn't easy quitting but when I read about the effects of artificial sweetenters, it was a great incentive to quit. Best advice is to keep plain old water with you at all times as it helps keep your system in balance so you don't crave the DC. Club soda or seltzer (lower in sodium than club soda) are wonderful for the burn. There are also flavored club sodas that have no calories and nothing artificial. Canfield's is a good choice if that's available in your area, or Canada Dry. They're sometimes in the soda aisle, sometimes with the bottled water. Other regional brands are also available in most grocery stores. Good luck. You can do it. And you'll feel better every day that you stay away from that stuff! ozgrlbelize

I have a hard time starting my day without a Pepsi One. . . but I've found two things that work. One -- get the fix from only half a can, then dump the rest out (don't think too much about it). The first few gulps are the best anyway. :-) Two -- boil water with lemon and pour over ice, drink as much as you can stand. You'll feel hydrated and "detoxified" enough that you don't even want the soda.

I was addicted to Diet Coke for a long time. I would go through a 12 pack in a couple days. I gradually weaned myself off of it and started replacing it with lemon lime seltzer water. Nothing bad in that stuff and it satisfied my desire for something cold and fizzy. I drink seltzer all the time now and feel better because of it. Occassionally, I will grab a Diet Coke as a treat for myself - but more often than not I only drink it when I mix it with Wild Turkey.

I hope this is not true about pickled insides. I've been drinking DC since I was 11 or 12 everyday. WOW! Nonetheless, I was able to kick that addition this past month. It was not easy and walking past the see through vending machine is a hard task. I now drink the crystal light sugar free mixes. I don't have the headaches anymore from my body searching for the caffeine. It was awful, like an addict when I got into mood swings someone would kindly find me a DC. We need DC Anonymous. I really hope this product does not come back later on and bite us all in the behind for trying to have a satisfying drink without the calories. The weight gain comes from the carbonation. Since giving the drink up I dropped 8 pounds and my skin is glowing.

I'm SOOOO addicted to diet coke its not even funny!! This is horrible but I keep some in the trunk of my car so no matte where I am, I'll be able to have some. I think that is the definition of addict!!

I have a really bad problem with the Diet Coke myself, I drink probably 12 a day, no water, nothing but Diet Coke. If I wasn't so afraid of the withdraws I'd quit now, but the headaches are brutal, plus I work full time and go to school at night so I rely heavily on the caffeine intake! And what exactly does pickle your innards mean?

I completely gave up all foods with artificial sweetners on the advice of a nutritionist. That included my three cans a day of diet coke, Crystal Light and all kinds of diet fruit drinks. My drink of choice these days is Perrier water, cause I love those bubbles. I also bought an ice tea maker, which is the best. I make my own combinations of herbal and fruit teas that are delicious. The machine cost $20 and the tea probably costs me a nickel a glass. So these days I feel better and save money.

Thankfully I haven't been addicted to regular or diet soda. Sweet drinks just do not quench my thirst at all. But I know how hard it can be to take it completely out of your diet when there are machines in the break room and stressful days that just beg for a coke or mountain dew. The theory behind diet sodas making you gain weight is mainly because you tend to crave more sweet things. I try to drink tea or water instead, and if I want something sweet I go for the juice.

don't you have a scientific study to cite or anything like that other than your friend's word?

I am a diet coke addict as well and have recently gone down to one can a day from six, I would like more reasons to quit other than it's bad for you, and you'll lose weight if you quit. Right now headaches and early afternoon jitters is what is making me hold on to one a day. Does anyone have any cold hard facts on the harmful effects?

I lost 40 pounds by not drinking diet soda...gives you a reason to drink more water, which makes you full.

I gave up diet sodas mar 5th and feel better than ever. I replaced my 3-4 coke a day habit with tea, originally sweetened with honey or Blue agave necter, but now I drink it unsweetened. I used both regular lipton type tea and used herbal iced tea after 3 pm. Diet soda was my one bad health habit and I thought " how bad can it be?" After 12 years of diet sodas I thought I had fibromyalgia and was on aleve, an antidepressant, and an antiacid (due to the the other 2 drugs) and now I am off EVERYTHING! I also give the antioxidants in the teas partial credit.AlsoI advise you to tell all your friends you aren't drinking anymore sodas so that you feel "on the spot" and they can encourage you to get off.

I hate to see parents feed their kids diet sodas. I think it's much worse for their health. DRINK WATER!

How does this Compare with "Coke-O" ???

I looked at my mom and dad getting fat and my grandparents getting ill, and looked at the things they all ate and looked at what I was doing and decided where I DIDN'T want to go.

      Look at your parents.

      Look at your grandparents.

Look at the drugs they take.

      Look at where you're going.

      STOP!

It's okay to make sacrifices of the everyday 'consumer' pleasures such as liquid candy and fast food. In fact, given the looming meltdown of the health industry (Thank God for that!!) losing the fizzy soda water and sugar-flavor craving may be the best healthcare in the world.

I stopped years ago drinking the fizzy stuff, let my palate adjust to more flavors than sweet and have dropped 20 lbs - and get this - WITHOUT TRYING!

That alone is enough to get my attention!

If I can do this, anyone can, 'cos I'm bone lazy.

      Deb.
