I started realizing something a while ago, store bought ice cream doesn't taste so great. When I was a kid,
it tasted amazing, but now that my taste buds are yearning for deeper flavor, I wanted, needed, to make
my own ice cream. The problem was, I didn't own an ice cream maker. But that wasn't going to stop me.
Researching the internet and Food Network was in vain. I looked for alternatives. Kulfi (an Indian ice
cream) came to mind. Though it was scrumptious, IT WASN'T ICE CREAM!!
However, now I have stumbled upon a delicious ice cream recipe that must be shared.
- 4 egg yolks
- 1/4 cup sugar
- pinch salt
- 1/2 cup half and half
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
Beat the first three ingredients in a glass or stainless steel bowl. Once thoroughly incorporated, place on a double boiler, making sure the water is simmering and the bowl does not touch the water. Slowly, stir the
egg mixture until it is thick and creamy. Make sure not to scramble the eggs. Once the eggs are at the desired consistency, take off the heat, and stir in the half and half, and cocoa powder. Place the ice cream in a container and freeze for about 2 hours. Enjoy!!
This serves about two people.
If a thicker ice cream is desired, reduce the half and half to 1/3 cup. The texture will resemble a creamy fudge.
