    Honey Boo Boo's Favorite 'Sketti' Dinner Recipe: We Made it & so Can You

    skettiskettiMmm, anyone want some SKETTI? Yum yum, it's Honey Boo Boo's favorite dish, next to grilled roadkill, of course. June shows us how she makes this exotic delicacy on the show. It's spaghetti with the family's special sauce: Ketchup mixed with butter. Well, they call it butter but it's actually some sort of margarine.

    I have to admit, I was intrigued by this dish. What does that taste like? June makes it look so easy, but do I need any special skills to cook it? (Ha, kidding!) Most importantly, would my kid eat it? I had to find out!

    Okay, so from the video below I ascertained that the recipe for sketti is as follows:

    • Boil spaghetti.
    • Melt some margarine in the microwave. The Thompsons seem partial to Country Crock.
    • Squirt some ketchup into the melted margarine and stir well. Then stir into the cooked pasta. Enjoy!

    As it happens I don't actually have a microwave oven. I know, right? Who is the really freak here?!? But I do know that if you add butter or... whatever butter-like product directly into hot, cooked pasta it will melt immediately. So I stirred in a glob of margarine and then I kept squirting in ketchup until it was more or less the same color as June's pasta. Do you know what that means?

    Anyway, now it was time to sample the stuff. I tasted it and found it wasn't as horrible as I expected it to be. But since I don't like ketchup I still thought it was kind of gross. It got worse, though. Margarine has a weird aftertaste I'm not used to (I always use butter) and I can still taste it now. Shudder. Seriously, that stuff goes down your throat and leaves a trail all the way down your esophagus!

    But maybe my son would like it. I called him over and forced him to taste it. He loves the smell of cooking pasta but when he got closer he caught a whiff of the ketchup -- he hates ketchup, too -- and almost ran away. I grabbed him and made him taste the stuff anyway. He chewed thoughtfully for a moment. "It's not that bad," he said. "But that was a pretty rotten trick you just played on me. Ugh." And then he ran away before I could make him take a second taste.

    So much for sketti. Not a winner in our family. If anything, I think the dish reveals what freaks WE are: No microwave, only eat butter, can't digest margarine, hate ketchup. Are we even real Americans?!? This sketti experience is totally freaking me out. I think I'm gonna have to run out and spend some times with the pigs out back and think this over.
