How long does OJ keep before it loses vitamins?

Since we're not big juice drinkers in our house, OJ usually only makes its way into our fridge when guests come to visit. Even then, it still takes us a few weeks to polish off the carton. I never thought much about keeping the OJ for a few weeks. After all, it still tastes good-and we usually finish it before the expiration date. Then I read this study that showed opened OJ loses all antioxidant benefit after just one week! Seriously? Well, as you can imagine, this led me to wonder if other items in my kitchen lose their health punch over time. (Spoiler alert: they do!)

Keep track of how long you store these 4 items. Here's why: certain nutrients are unstable when exposed to oxygen (from the air), heat (from cooking) and light.

    Orange juice: 1 week
One cup of OJ can offer a full day's dose of vitamin C. But OJ that has been opened loses all antioxidant benefit after just one week. To get the most vitamin C, buy frozen concentrate and drink within a few days. Frozen concentrate is exposed to less light and air. (Use your OJ before it loses its nutritional punch: make Grilled Orange Chicken Fingers and more delicious recipes with orange juice.)

    Green tea: 6 months
A 2009 study in the Journal of Food Science showed that catechins (antioxidants linked with a reduced risk of some cancers) in green tea decreased markedly over time. After six months, catechin levels were 32 percent lower. Make the most of the antioxidants by storing tea in a sealed container in a dark, cool place.
(Add this 1 ingredient to your tea to make it healthier.)

    Olive oil: 6 months
Extra-virgin olive oil contains more than 45 heart-healthy antioxidants, but after six months of storage their potency decreases by about 40 percent, according to researchers at the University of Foggia in Italy. Why? Oxygen bubbles in the bottle destroy the antioxidants.
(Find out which brands won our Olive Oil Taste Test and find out how to shop for the healthiest and tastiest olive oil.)

    Honey: 6 months
Researchers at the University of Illinois found the antioxidant power of clover and buckwheat honey decreased by 30 to 50 percent after six months. Consider buying buckwheat honey-it generally has more antioxidants to start with.

I don't think people who cook with olive oil regularly need to worry about the bottle staying on our shelf for longer than a month, let alone 6!

Um, new research has shown that antioxidants aren't actually good for you, your body used oxidants to repair itself not antioxidants. You have to have oxygen to repair and antioxidants remove oxygen.

my question is when does the countdown start, day of production, day of starting warehouse storage, day starting on grocery shelf? i can see the benefit of frozen oj but what about the other products not frozen on day of production. we all know its a long time from the plant to the grocery shelf.or has anybody thought about it?

The article says make Grilled Orange Chicken Fingers with your OJ "before it loses its nutritional punch" but I suspect the heat from grilling the chicken will weaken if not eliminate the OJ's anti-oxidant powers. High heat usually promotes the kind of chemical reactions you hope the OJ will be doing inside you, and I doubt much goodness will be left by the time your chicken is cooked.

THAT would be a helpful article: how much nutritional goodness do you really lose when you grill a marinade, boil/steam your lycopene- or carotene- rich veggies, heat up your EVOO to fry stuff, or stew your herbs for an hour.

The grilled chicken sounds tasty, though...

It appears the antioxidants are doing what they are intended to do, slowing oxidation, and preserving the product longer.

The Anti-Oxidants story and "vitamin" story is a real one BUT it is true that juice and fruits lose such contents very quickly. It borders false advertising to state that healthy fruit juice have high anti-oxidants levels and vitamin levels because the companies selling such products use fresh fruit data to back up their claims. The juice gets old and the fruits used are in fractional quantities. Therefore, it has very little effect and no corrolation with the actual fruits.
The only product I have found working for anti-oxidant and IMMUNE SYSTEM BOOST is MK ACTIVE. It is a small company but their stuff works and keeps its content. Check it out mkactive.com

Great story. Next time write your own article. You get a big fat zero for creativity and a kick in your nuts for stealing someone's glory...get a life thief.

Actually, once it is pasteurized it loses most of the vitamin C so, if what you are looking for is the vitamin, just buy oranges and squeeze them yourself, otherwise you (as myself sometimes) would be going only for the flavor.

My question would be if it is frozen for long periods before its open does it lose the all those benefits?

i agree with most of what you say except you should NEVER drink anything from concentrate!!!!! it is about useless!

This is really good to know because some of us like keeping juices for a longer time thinking we are ecconomizing not knowing we are rather killing ourselves softly. We will learn from our mistakes.

Dear Ms. Brierley Wright, M.S., R.D., I am not sure where you get your information from or how you come up with it, but your recommendation of using frozen concentrated orange juice instead of regular juice is completely nonsense because most, if not all vitamins are destroyed during the concentration process. Squeeze some fresh oranges and drink the juice right away, because anything that comes from a can or carton is dead meat.

We have really boosted our immunesystem by juicing almost every morning over the last couple of years. Bought the Jack La Lane juicer (you can get it in Target now) and a Krups Citrus Press - electrical (Bed, Bath & Beyond)- because it's easier to juice an orange on one like that, than in a regular juicer because you have to peel it first. On the juicer we juice vegetables (spinach, cale, beets, carrots etc.etc. and citrus fruits on the citrus press. You can mix it or not and it tasts wonderful and give you a good start and a lot of vitamins on an empty stomach in the morning. We chose a stainless steel Jack Lalane's juicer because it looks nice with our other appliances and we keep it out all the time- plus you don't have to cut what you are juicing in small pieces. Takes whole apples f.x. - we just cut the stem off. Doesn't really take that long time either - I go to the store and get what I want to juice (best organic of course), leafy greens, like spinach, kale ect, I rinse and put in the green vegeable bags you can buy at the store/ready for the mornings. It's easy when you get the hang of it - takes 5-10 min and you juice is ready. Easy to clean as well! My opinion is to wait with your morning coffee or other caffeine drinks
1-2 hours at least and let you body absorb the vitamins and the juice will give you your energi :o) - Good luck if you decide to be even more healthy!!
You could start with the Electrical Citrus Press and get the fresh orange juice - yummi!! We love it!!!

I think the only one that is particularly interesting is the green tea. Green tea is exposed to light and air right from the start. It's picked, dried, and bundled, then you have the time it takes to get to the US (most of it comes from the other side of the world) and get to the packager, the time it sits on the shelves at the store, and the time it sits in your home before you drink it. That could easily be 6 months. So how do you calculate exactly when it begins losing its antioxidant benefits?

I'd figure honey and olive oil were long lasting due to the fact they are biblical day items that have been known to be used in preserving other food items...

Let's leave the benefits of anti-oxidants in the heap of fads that are proven useless and possilby even detrimental to our health...it's now old school nonsense that everyone wants to capitalize on, or prove their diet intellect with.

People none of this matters, Just eat your food how you like it work out and live the best you can. All these tips they give you are consumerist ideas to sell more products. No food is really going to save you as much as you may think it will compared to good old excersize and non over indulgance. Every ones best bets would be to grow your own food and hunt your meat but get real were not going to do that, next best thing would be buy your food for use daily don't pack in your pantry and fridge once or twice a month but go two or three times a week and by what you need for a couple days at a time. Every thint you eat should be perishable and i dont mean it's going to last a month no it should go bad with in a week of opening.
