    Taste Test: The Best Salsa!

We taste-tested dozens of salsas from the grocery store, local stores and online to find our favorites.

    BEST MILD: Brad's Organic Salsa
The biggest complaint about most jarred salsas: processed flavor. But panelists said this chunky combo tastes "like a bowl of fresh tomatoes;" "I could eat it like gazpacho." (bradsorganic.com for stores) Read the full review »
Try it in: Baja Fish Tacos »

BEST MEDIUM: Rosa Mexicano Chile Pasilla de Oaxaca Salsa
Created by chefs at the popular restaurant chain, this salsa's "intense, smoky" flavor comes from pasilla de Oaxaca chiles (a cousin of the chipotle). (rosamexicano.com) Read the full review »

BEST HOT: Drew's Hot Organic Salsa
Testers loved the chunky, balanced mix of tomatoes, cumin, jalapeño and roasted vegetables, and the measured level of heat: Great flavor without the pain. (chefdrew.com for stores) Read the full review »

BEST OF THE BIG GUNS: Pace Picante Mild Sauce
The recipe hasn't changed since David Pace developed it 60 years ago in San Antonio, Texas, and it still calls for handpicked jalapeños: more than 25 million pounds a year. Judges liked its "classic, no-fuss taste."(at grocery stores) Read the full review »
Try it in: Brisket Nachos »

BEST CORN: Desert Pepper Trading Company Corn, Black Bean, Roasted Red Pepper Salsa
Many brands in this category were runny or low on corn, but this one "would hold its own on nachos or burritos," one panelist said. A generous helping of lime juice supplies "just the right amount of zing." (desertpepper.com for stores) Read the full review »
Try it in: Skirt Steak Burritos with Tomato-Corn Salsa »

BEST GREEN: Santa Fé Seasons Tomatillo Salsa
Fresh tomatillos (a green relative of the tomato), jalapeños and lime juice give this light, refreshing salsa its intense green color and ripe, tangy taste. (santafeseasons.com for stores) Read the full review »
Try it in: Grilled Pork with Green Tomato Salsa »

BEST FRUIT: Santa Barbara Tangy Apple Salsa
Tomatoes and apples aren't an obvious match, but judges loved the "unique, appealing flavor," likening it to "apple chutney with a kick." One panelist said, "Forget the chips, it would be great on a pork chop." (sbsalsa.com for stores) Read the full review »
Try it in: Grilled Pork Chops with Peachy Hot Salsa »

BEST EXOTIC: Natalie's Naturals Edamame Bean Salsa

Frog Ranch Chipotle is the best I've ever had, the regular Hot and mild are good too, for those of you with lower heat tolerance. I have taste too, I was using Sweet Baby Ray's barbeque sauce decades before it got other's attention. Those of you who have Kroger's to shop, they stock the Frog Ranch.

Ms Renfros is the bomb..habanero is the best if you like hot salsa. I just order it from the website because it can be hard to find, but did find it at Target.

Herdez is by far the best in the Southwest. Pace doesn't hold a candle!

We found the recipe for chicken breasts baked in salsa on the back of the Pace jars is wonderful and very easy. Even a non-cook, like me, can make an impressive meal.

Mango & Peach Salsa is the perfect blend of tropical mangoes and the delicate sweetness of cling peaches. With just a touch of heat, and a delicate balance of tomato and fruit flavor, this is one fruit salsa you can enjoy over and over. Makes a great topping for grilled fish, fowl and pork, not to mention as an hors d'oeuvre over a brick of cream cheese.

Hi, Nice article but, I must say Sabrosa's Foods Inc. all natural gourmet roasted bell pepper salsa is (in my book) both the best tasting and healthiest salsa plus it's formulated for low acid which helps keep the heartburn and acid reflux away. If you have not tried this delicious salsa you have no idea what you're missing!!! Take a look for yourselves.......www.sabrosafoods.com

D-U-M-B! All those salsas are pooh. Casa Sanchez out of SF is the best store bought salsa hands down.

I agree with groverox; Newman's Own is great, and tastes fresh. I especially like their lime and pineapple salsas. Wonderful.

I sometimes make my own but mostly el paso this article is about one thing and that's getting people to spend more money on organic which is much more expensive than non organic and not necessarily any better. Preservatives are fine if you eat them just not in massive quantities. Salt is a preservative the human body needs salt but too much of it will hurt the body. Organic are for people who are paranoid, want to think themselves better than everyone else, or people with allergies to certain preservatives.

The people of New Mexico are seriously laughing at this!!!! pace is nothing but a glorified wannabe salsa!!!!
Go to Albuquerque, N.M. and try Los Compadres Mexican restaurant!!! The best salsa and food!!!
      Hands down.

I can't believe that you didn't test Frieda's salsa! It's the absolute best - mild, medium, or spicy.

Another useless article that lists a bunch of products my stores doesn't sell and that I have never heard of. I personally like red gold salsa, otherwise I would make fresh pico de gayo, rather than try to chase any of these down.

I like the taste of salsa, BUT food is not supposed to hurt, and there is no reason for it to. A little spice is fine if there's some flavor to it, particularly from a medicinal standpoint, but I see any reason for anyone to intentionally eat anything that painfull just for the sake of the pain, unless of course you have masochistic tendencies or enjoy sounding like a pig when you eat. No food is good enough if I have to suffer through it.
