The whole point of this piece is that we don't always have fresh fruit available, sometimes because of storage issues and maybe we want a little change now and then. You know the old saying "variety is the spice of life".

While I agree that fresh fruits and veggies are, for the most part, the most healthy... if you actually looked at the sentence above all the pictures it says the article is about, "These tasty, nutritious Packaged Bites will wean you off the vending machine". All of these items seem to be meant as healthy options to common packaged snacks.

I don't know about the other products, but I live in Vermont and I swear by the Vermont Smoke and Cure sticks. They are about 90 calories each and pack some good protein. I take a handful on my 60+ mile bike rides and they do the trick. (You can get them shipped to you and they cost about as much as a slim jim.)

Sadie: I've seen the Just Apples, Annies, and Kale snacks at our Whole Foods for quite a while. I haven't paid attention to the others. A lot of times I can find the items on amazon.com and they have free shipping with orders over $25.

But I agree with several people. They aren't all the healthiest snacks, just healthier version of the regular snacks. Kale chips vs. regular chips. Just Apples is healthier than those fried veggies/fruits that I see in the bulk section of grocery stores. Annies is organic. And they are way more expensive than my favorite snacks - apples, pears, carrots, lettuce wraps, spring rolls, etc.

However, if the author had said healthy *packaged* snacks, I think it would not be as misleading. These snacks definitely are handier, healthier, and keep in the pantry for longer. They are expensive though!

Why is the healthiest stuff always newer fringe items, never normal everyday items that have been around forever. How did the healthy people of yesteryear ever survive?

I prefer a bag of dirt & twigs over a bag od dried seaweed. How about an apple or an orange for a healthy snack

I love eating seaweed like chips. Most Walmarts carry nori wrappers now, and these are tasty and pretty cheap. If you have an Asian market near, you can find roasted seaweed which has a crispier texture. Some brands come in snack packs, and they are delicious.

The Danielle Chips are gluten free and a great snack. The Coconut Chips are awesome!
They are real popular at http://www.glutensolutions.com, where you can find your favorite and best tasting gluten free foods.
