The best farmers markets in America

Are farmers markets part of your weekly routine? I can't seem to get in the groove. Maybe I'm not enough of a planner. On occasion, fate (aka my morning coffee) brings us together. If the market near my coffee spot is open, I usually take several dreamy minutes with the romantic wares. Homemade honey, local figs, flowers, and cheese, and I think to myself, I need to be here more. Livability.com, a website that specializes in helping people decide where to live, has announced which American places they think have the best farmers markets. Maybe if I was living in one of these towns, I'd have the farmers market schedule programmed into my phone, and I'd be there with reusable bags in hand as the vendors set up. Maybe.

Having been to most of the biggest and best - Here's my top list.
      Union Square, NYC
      Portland, OR
Ferry Plaza, San Francisco or Marin Co Sunday Mkt
      Madison, WI
      Santa Monica, LA
      St Petersburg, FL

These are once a week markets, not market halls - which is a separate category.

New Castle Farmers Market in New Castle, Delaware is a worderful place to spend the weekends.

Tampa Florida has one of the largest farmers markets that I have ever been to.

I don't know who took it upon themselves to choose the BEST farmers markets around. Where did they get this information and research and stats without any input or votes from the general public. This is America, we have a right to vote. Opinions should not be constued as fact. Who ever wrote this should do their homework!!!

We have a great one in Ogden, UT. And I hear the one in Salt Lake City is awesome as well, although I have not been there myself!

Did no one think to mention Iowa, other than the gentleman who was taking a poke at Podunk, Ia.Contrary to popular belief-Iowa is not filled with hick towns, or podunk cities. Des Moines, and most all of the small towns have some sort of Farmer's Market. Cedar Rapids has several sites. They sell everything from home raised meats, veggies, to home crafted iron-works,eggs,fruits,baked goods, crafts, all fresh from the Heartland-where the food is THE BEST!!!

When we lived in San Diego we had several markets to pick from 7 days a week. This is how we introduced vegetables and produce to our son, when he was little.

Where's the mention of the farmers' market at the capital in Madison, Wisconsin? That's definitely the best market I've ever been to. It has dozens of vendors selling fruits, veggies, honey, flowers, baked goods, meat, fish, eggs, the list goes on and on. They have a great selection of organic and truly free-range food, and there are a few pastry vendors we make sure to visit every time we go!

Although my city has a nice farmer's market, my favorite is the one in Nashville, Tennessee.

How about any one of dozens of markets in New York's Hudson Valley?

El Cerrito, CA should be on this list. Considering that CA produces more produce that all other states, I'm surprised that only one CA FM made this list. Where else can you get the most beautiful heirloom tomatoes (at least 40 varieties) for $2.50 a pound?

I love the Farmer's Market at Oklahoma State University in Oklahoma City every Saturday. It's wonderful. Be sure to check out your local farmer's market, you can pretty much get your entire weeks worth of groceries there nowadays! Besides fruits and veggies, you can get honey, nut butters, breads in all forms, pastries, salsas, flours, cheeses, beef, chicken, (they also have lamb and buffalo mine). They also have homemade dog treats, jewelry, soaps, and hand-knitted kitchen towels, etc. You never know what you'll find at the farmer's market!

I like the year-round Soulard Farmers Market just South of Downtown St. Louis, MO. It's more than 200 years old and has everything except a dairy. At least two bakers, several meat and poultry vendors, lots of growers as well as produce resellers, plus sellers of homemade soap and incense, cheap clothing, an amazing spice shop and lots more.

Good luck finding anything remotely market-like in the horribly mall infested suburbs of Houston Texas. For 32 years I have been dreaming of my childhood trips to markets all over Europe.Still cannot figure out how I could have ended here.

Couldn't live without the Eastern Market in Detroit. Farmers, merchants, etc. It's the best.
