    The best fat-burning breakfasts

You know that eating breakfast jump-starts your metabolism. But did you realize that certain a.m. choices can crank up your fat-burning even more?

The key: eating a breakfast that's high in Resistant Starch (RS). Found in foods like bananas and oats, RS actually signals your body to use fat for energy.

Start your day skinny with these fat-blasting meals from Health's new book, The CarbLovers Diet.

    In a Rush?
Reach for a Resistant Starch-packed banana and one of these on-the-go options-you'll still get the healthy carbs and calories you need to start your day in slim-down mode!

    • Panera Bread Strawberry and Granola Parfait: 310 calories
    • Dunkin' Donuts Ham, Egg White, and Cheese Sandwich on a Wheat English Muffin: 300 calories
    • Jamba Juice Coldbuster Smoothie (16 ounces): 250 calories

Keep a stash in your kitchen:
    • Aunt Millie's Whole-Grain Blueberry Muffins: 170 calories
    • Kashi TLC Pumpkin Spice Flax Crunchy Granola Bar: 170 calories
    • Amy's Kitchen Breakfast Burrito: 270 calories

    Insider secret
Choose a banana that's tinged with a little green for even more Resistant Starch. Once the fruit ripens, the starches in it turn to sugar, and the amount of Resistant Starch it contains drops.

An underripe banana has 12.5 grams of RS (enough to take care of the minimum 10 grams of RS daily that's recommended in The CarbLovers Diet); a ripe one has 4.7 grams.

We like to make our own parfait with 1/2 cup Kashi GoLean Crunch cereal, 6 oz. Lite vanilla yogurt, and 1 cup mixed fresh fruit; we use fresh strawberries, grapes, blueberries, 1/2 banana.

How does a resistant starch make you feel more organized? I could use some of that.

Prevention magazine's Flat Belly Diet had very similar elements to it. It worked pretty well too. You had to have some sort of nut butter, seeds and olive oil during the day. It was very healthy as well. The book has been out for a while now. You can probably find it new or used on Amazon. It was pretty easy to follow and I felt really good on it. You seem to lose a few pounds a week if you stick with it and your belly really does go down.

      Hey Michael,
You really NEED to see your doctor. You have a problem and it needs to be addressed. PLEASE! Do this for yourself, your friends and family. If you don't you will KILL yourself. I know you want to live or you wouldn't have asked for advice.

I am overweight myself. But I have to tell you this. Half a pie at one time is DEFINATELY over-indulging. I don't care if you put low calorie whip cream on it. That is WAY TOO MUCH. Besides plain raw fruit is actually better for you. Yes! The pie has fruit. But it also has a VERY HIGH amount of sugar, flour and fat. Cottage cheese IS good for you. But even cottage cheese can be too much of a good thing. One-quarter to one-half a cup of cottage cheese is plenty at one meal.

What else do you eat? Remember, you need a WELL BALANCED diet of fruits, vegetables, protein in various forms, fiber, calcium etc.Your fiber needs to be good fiber .I mean fiber from various fruits and vegetables and WHOLE GRAIN and WHOLE WHEAT. We buy Nature's Own bread because it has whole grain or whole wheat flour as the FIRST ingredient. One thing though. EVERYTHING needs to be in MODERATION. You also need to start drinking more PLAIN WATER. That means water. Not coffee, tea, soda, juice, Koolaid etc.

Add cinnamon to your weight control oatmeal, it helps metabolize your food and it controls sugar levels. Very beneficial. ICE COLD water first thing in the morning is key alongside veggies and high lean protein like boiled eggs and non fat yogurt

Blueberry Oatmeal Pancakes so good! I didn't have enough blueberries so addies Craisins dried cherries. That made the pancakes sweeter and I didn't even use the yougart or syrup. What a great way to change my morning oatmeal and blueberries.

if you are insulin resistant, a high carb breakfast is not a good idea...low carb is good except for when you need to power exercise, then that oatmeal with banana meal is a good idea. What we have to remember is we use food for what we need. I high carb meal right before exercising is a good idea. We also need good fats to help us burn calories, such as salmon fish (or fish oil gel caps) and nuts and seeds. What it all boils down to is eat less, exercise more, and you will lose weight. There is no secret. If you are pre-diabetic and a high carb meal makes you feel funny, then eat low carb and you will feel better.

what that means is "I choose to not lose weight"

All these high-tech articles are well-intended, but take it from a lifelong dieter (I've lost 50 pounds several times):

All you need to do is COUNT CALORIES. Count them RELIGIOUSLY. Pay no attention to all of these fancy notions. Ignore "no-carb" and "resistant starch" and "hi-protein" and Weight Watchers "points" and "good carbs" .... they are unnecessary.

Just COUNT CALORIES and be strict about it. Repeat: Be STRICT about it. If you do this, you cannot fail. If you do a significant amount of exercise, then deduct those calories. But if the exercise is not significant, then don't bother. I give myself 100 calories for every ten minutes of SOLID cardio. Anything else, I pretty much ignore. A little 20-minute walk after dinner, I ignore, or at best give 100 calorie credit to.

The battle is won at the mouth. The only weapon you need is calorie counting.

Another thing: If it ain't hurtin' it ain't workin'. I don't mean to cyou have to be constantly white-knuckling it, but if you are on some fad diet, and you aren't having stretches of emotional discomfort and some hunger pangs every so often, then you aren't losing weight.

      Gorby (tubby little buddy),
Check your thyroid!! I gained like 30 lbs eating correctly and exercising every day. I had lots of stress and a thyroid gland out of whack and each week I picked up a pound. Before I realized it, I had gained a tremendous amount of weight. Now I am on the thyroid meds and did Weight Watchers and feel so much better...oh, and did I mention I went on a thyroid med? Good Luck, get checked, sounds like thyroid or maybe low/high blood sugar.
