The best-tasting diet-friendly snacks in the chip aisle

Crunch! Pop! Crackle! No, it's not a fight scene from the original Batman TV series. Those are the glorious sounds of what you find in the chip aisle. But danger lurks there in the form of fatty, fried goodies. Never fear. Hungry Girl is here with guilt-free picks.

    Popchips Barbeque Potato Chips

    PER SERVING (19 chips): 120 calories, 4g fat, 250mg sodium, 20g carbs, 1g fiber, 2g sugars, 1g protein

What Are They? These chips are innovative -- they're popped (not fried), so they taste great without all the oil. Clever!!!

Why We Love 'Em… Although there's no shortage of BBQ-flavored chips out there (even guilt-free ones), these are on a whole different level. Just the right amount of tanginess and crunch. Delicious!

More from Hungry Girl: Onion rings covered in Barbeque Popchips!

Baked Classics Vanilla Frosting Multigrain Crisps

    PER SERVING (one 1-oz. bag): 120 calories, 4g fat, 60mg sodium, 19g carbs, 2g fiber, 4g sugars, 2g protein

What Are They? The newest flavor from Baked Classics, these crisps are layered in a light coating of vanilla-frosting flavor.

Why We Love 'Em… They didn't look like much when we opened the package, but when we took our first bite, WOWEE! These really do taste like yummy vanilla frosting! Need we say more?

    Guiltless Gourmet Tortilla Chips

    PER SERVING (1 oz., about 18 chips): 110 - 123 calories, 2 - 3g fat, 26 - 250mg sodium, 19 - 23g carbs, 2g fiber, 0 - 1g sugars, 2 - 3g protein

What Are They? These are our go-to guilt-free tortilla chips. Why? Because they're just so crispy and come in eight impressive varieties.

Why We Love 'Em… Flavor, flavor, and more flavor! The Chipotle chips are fantastic (a bit hot and sweet). The Mucho Nacho ones are awesomely cheesy. And we also enjoy the Yellow Corn (both salted and unsalted) and Spicy Black Bean varieties. YUM!!

More from Hungry Girl: Chicken coated in tortilla chips!

Special K Sour Cream & Onion Cracker Chips

    PER SERVING (27 chips): 110 calories, 2.5g fat, 230mg sodium, 22g carbs, 3g fiber, 1g sugars, 2g protein

What Are They? Don't let the name fool ya. These are just Popchips copycats. Not sure where the cracker part comes in, but they still taste great.

Why We Love 'Em… Sometimes sour cream & onion chips can be a bit overpowering in flavor, but these have just the right amount of zip. And 27 chips per serving is insane (in a perfectly wonderful way)!

Cape Cod 40% Less Fat Potato Chips

    PER SERVING (1 oz., about 18 - 23 chips): 130 calories, 6g fat, 110 - 220mg sodium, 18g carbs, 1 - 2g fiber, 0 - 2g sugars, 2g protein

What Is It? Through a crazy combination of their standard kettle-cooking process and something called "flash baking," the Cape Cod folks created perfect-tasting, reduced-fat chips.

Why We Love It... We wish they had more flavors, but the three that they have (Original, Sea Salt & Vinegar, and Sweet Mesquite Barbeque) are fantastic! The taste is identical to the regular chips in our opinion, so you won't miss the fat... Promise!

    Michael Season's Baked Single-Serving Chips

    PER SERVING (1 bag): 100 calories, 2.5 - 3.5g fat, 160 - 180mg sodium, 15 - 18g carbs, 1 - 2g fiber, 1 - 3g sugars, 2g protein

What Are They? Gluten-free, wheat-free baked chips that have 70% less fat than potato chips... which is great and all if you can stop after one serving. But we can't -- so these single-serving bags are perfect!

Why We Love 'Em… Portion control always makes up happy. And the amazing taste kicks cravings to the curb.

100-Calorie Bags Kettle Brand Baked Potato Chips

    PER SERVING (1 bag): 100 calories, 2.5 - 3g fat, 110 - 170mg sodium, 16 - 17g carbs, 1 - 2g fiber, 0 - 1g sugars, 2g protein

What Are They? Portion-controlled chips in three flavors: Sea Salt, Aged White Cheddar, and Sea Salt & Vinegar.

Why We Love 'Em… They're sturdy, slightly thick -- totally unlike the baked chips you know. And they taste freakishly identical to regular fried ones but have 65 percent less fat.

Genisoy Roasted Garlic & Onion Soy Crisps

    PER SERVING (17 crisps): 100 calories, 2g fat, 280mg sodium, 14g carbs, 2g fiber, 1g sugars, 7g protein

What Are They? We've been fans of Genisoy's snacks for years. These baked crisps are made from a blend of soy and rice; they pack a whopping 7 grams of protein into each serving.

Why We Love 'Em… These are awesome as a stand-alone snack or topped with cheese, shrimp, tuna, etc. And crushed, they make a TERRIFIC topping for a slimmed-down green bean casserole. (Forget those crunchy fried onions!)

Snack Factory Original Deli Style Pretzel Crisps

    PER SERVING (11 crisps): 110 calories, 0 fat, 330mg sodium, 23g carbs, 1g fiber, 2g sugars, 3g protein

What Are They? These fat-free crisps basically look like a giant tank came and steamrolled over regular pretzel twists. Awwwww...

Why We Love 'Em… For some reason, these taste WAY better than regular pretzels. And they are perfect for dipping and spreading with guilt-free Hungry Girl favorites like light cheese wedges by The Laughing Cow.

Yeah, I hear you on that, there's just no substitute for real, honest-to-goodness potato chips, gimme the stacked-in-a-can ones any day, or kettle-cooked ... but I do NOT eat them regularly anymore. They are a once-in-a-while treat, and not the whole container either. That said, I see no reviews of my favorite healthier salty snacks: Sensible Portions Sea Salt Veggie Chips (38 chips per serving, now that's what I call a good snack!) and Cheeto's Puffcorn (a really yummy cheese-curls substitute). And no one's mentioned Pepperidge Farm Goldfish crackers, 49 are a serving, another decent-sized portion for a satisfying snack.

Youi kindly sent some of your baked classic and vanilla frosting potatoe chips to 1 of our weight watcher members to bring to our meeting,
I had the Mesquite BBQ flavour and enjoyed them, only one thing!!! they were a bit sweet for me, do you really need to put sugar in this product.
Otherwise they could become part of our points system as a treat.
Thank you for sending them for us to try.

Lots of dumb comments from stupid kids posted here. Popchips may be healthier than regular chips, but they taste great. Nobody with a brain would prefer to eat unhealthy when both types of chips taste the same.

In regards to the POP CHIPS the best ones {in my opinion) are the BBQ and plain ones sold at Trader Joes. Also a much better deal than other stores.

Thanks for the review, its nice to get some feedback on these before I spend the money on something "hoping" it doesn't taste bad! I love the full fat chips as much as anyone, but its nice to have some healthy snack options in my pantry as well!

Way too much salt and sugar to be healthy or diet friendly.
Hungry girl must not be Healthy girl, that's for sure.

      You missed a great one

Well I guess this article would be helpful to dieters, but for the rest of us who don't need to diet, it's useless. Just as long as we don't go overboard with the less "healthy" chips, we don't need to start eating healthy chips.

Diet or not, Pop Chips are awesome!

Yo, those Special K Cracker Chips are really, really good. About 5 years ago I started eating healthy, and what I have found is that for every unhealthy food out there, there is a healthier alternative..

I realize that most people don't like "diet food". However, if you're a "foodie" like me, who just recently lost 55 lbs--NOT BY DIETING, but by changing my overall lifestyle--low cal snacks like these really are helpful! If I purchase a bag of delicious, mouth watering, grease soaked, finger lickin' good chips, there's a good chance I'll think to myself, "What the heck! I've eaten a handful of crap that's bad for me. I might as well eat the rest of the bag!" However, these products kinda help me keep that behavior at bay. The pretzel crisps are actually REALLY tasty! And, since I don't feel crappy about chomping away on a serving size of them, I feel good about STOPPING the chomping when I've eaten that serving size. Everybody's entitled to their opinion, and honestly, I think the term "diet food" is a less than favorable one since diets, in my opinion, are a TOTAL waste of time. Bottom line, I actually find articles like this one rather helpful since I'm attempting to maintain my svelte, sexy figure now! :) ... It's nice to eat low cal, tasty snacks and not worry about regaining my thunder thighs! Ha! That way I can save the high calorie indulgences for foods I REALLY crave--not just a bag full of salty garbage--and not feel at all guilty about it!

the popchips are wonderful but they are hard to find...
    • Thinker  •  1 year 2 months ago
Wrong. These snacks are all way too unhealthy containing 14-25 gms of carbs which is 15-20% of the daily amount needed to maintain ones weight. Carbs and carbs alone are the cause of America's lard-ass epidemic. Wise-up.

I am a huge fan of the Cape Cod reduced fat chips AND they are not too salty either.
