    The Best Veggie Burgers?

Even if you're not a vegetarian, you've probably tried or at least eyed the veggie burgers in the frozen aisle.

I've been a vegetarian for over 25 years, and while fake meat doesn't make up a big part of my diet, there is no denying that I've consumed an ungodly number of veggie burgers over the years. I thought it was high time to do a head-to-head taste test, so you could know what brand to buy when you have me over for a barbecue.

The ground rules for this tasting:

    • Only widely available national brands.
    • Only "original" or "flame-broiled" flavors (or the simplest flavor available).
    • Each burger would be prepared according to the package instructions.
    • Each burger would be tasted twice: once naked, and once with a bit of Heinz ketchup.

Frankly, I was a bit surprised at how bad most of them tasted without a bun, cheese, onions, and all the other fixins'. Maybe a burger made with top-notch meat doesn't need much adornment, but these simulacra will benefit from big, bold-flavored condiments. Texture really is the critical element that makes a successful veggie burger.

Strangely, putting them out on six separate plates and using a mini legal pad to take notes didn't confer quite the air of cool scientific detachment I was aiming for (should have gone for the lab coat). But here are my decidedly opinionated results. Let us know if you agree, disagree, or think we missed the best ones.

    Best Overall:

Morningstar Farms Grillers: These were my hands-down favorite. I know I haven't eaten a real burger in a long time but these take me right back to the fast-food experience of my youth. Or maybe more like the school lunchroom experience. They are dark brown and meaty in texture with a more assertive soy flavor than the other brands, and no identifiable vegetable bits. This is the only one I would voluntarily eat without condiments.

    Decent Runners-Up:

Gardenburger Originals: Many folks associate this with the iconic "veggie burger." They have a natural-tasting, mildly sweet flavor and a satisfying bite. The texture is more of mushrooms and grain than soy. Be sure to cook them thoroughly though, otherwise you risk a slime factor.

Boca Burgers Original Vegan: Though a little dryer than Gardenburger, it has a mild and pleasant taste. I give the nod to Gardenburger but choose Boca if you need vegan.

    Hideous Smoke Flavor:

Boca All-American Classic and Garden Burger Flame Grilled Vegan: In contrast to brands' original varieties, these are appalling. The idea behind having a "smoke style" is to emulate a charcoal-grilled burger, right down to the grill marks. Unfortunately whatever they use for the smoke is acrid, bitter and chemical-tasting. Which is bizarre, since there are all manner of delicious, vegetarian smoked ingredients they could use instead. C'mon guys. Lose the chemistry lab and add some pimenton de la vera (smoked paprika), and you'd have a good product.

What Did I Do to Deserve This?

Amy's: And then there's Amy's. Now to be fair to Amy, I had to try the Amy's Bistro Burger, which is gluten-free and vegan. Their All-American Veggie Burger contains walnuts, which can never darken our doorstep. Still and nonetheless, this has to be one of the worst things I've put in my mouth, and that includes the time my housemate blended some splinters off a wooden spoon right into the the pesto. That I managed to try the second bite, with ketchup, is a testament to my dedication to you, the loyal reader.

But I digress. This patty, cooked in a skillet like all of the others, was spectacularly mushy, which in my book is unforgivable. Also, it is filled with bits of identifiable vegetables, including carrots. What this has to do with a burger, I can't say.

Just sit there on the bun, tasting bland but providing a toothsome counterpoint to the condiments and we can get along. But go all soggy on me and gum up every bite, and you are banished. Banished I say.

Please read all of this because I think I make some interesting points..

I've tried all of these national brands. I won't judge them on whether or not they taste like meat because that doesn't matter to me. I only care if they taste good, are healthy and contain whole protein.

So what do I think? Boca burgers taste bland and Gardenburgers taste plain weird. Morning Star Farms is only national company that understands how to season soy protein in a good way. Their veggie sausage tastes great although I'm concerned about how much folate there is per serving. I wonder if one can consume too much folate?

Then there's Dr. Praegers. The broccoli cakes sure taste great but they don't count since they hardly contain any protein. For meals, Dr. Praegers are better as a source of carbs perhaps along with some egg whites for protein.

To sum it up, none of the national companies know what they're doing except for Morning Star Farms but even they need some adjustment. Those spicy black bean burgers taste over the top somehow; perhaps a little too salty.

One more thing and this is my main beef: I worked for a hip, vegetarian restaurant that served the most wonderful gourmet veggie burgers. They were big and lumpy and flavorful and moist. They were lightyears beyond anything you can find in a grocery store and these things were not handmade. They were delivered to the restaurant by one of those major restaurant food suppliers like Cisco. So there is another world of better mass-made veggie burgers that exists but for some reason these are not sold in stores which needs to be changed.

Those veggie burgers are just full of soy protein. If you want a really tasty VEGGIE burger, I highly recommend Dr.Praeger's california style veggie burgers. THey are full of edamame, broccoli, corn, peas and oat bran. They are so delish!

I'm a meat-eater. Not just a meat-eater, but a meat enthusiast. Ribs, pulled pork, steak, chicken, you name it. I do like a veggie burger though, especially as a college student on the run. I don't live on campus, I commute, so I can throw a veggie burger in the microwave for a minute, throw it on a bun, and head to class. The Morningstar brand has my vote. They make a good patty- not soggy, or with big carrot chunks as the writer mentioned. I particularly like the Asian-style one, especially with some bean sprouts for crunch.

I'm a meat eater too. I like the veggie burgers for lunch because they are so easy to make, and lower calorie. I agree, Morningstar is the best. I usually buy the Boca originals, just because they are slightly cheaper and lower calorie than the others. The Boca burgers are just too bland (although they are fine with the bun, condiments, and other veggies). Morningstar tastes the most like real meat.

I love veggie burgers andI believe it or not, I think Burger King has some very tasty ones. If someone knows what brand they use, I'd love to know so I can buy them myself. It's great that they offer them because on those occasions when I need something quick, it's good to know I can get one there.

Andi and Amanda- if you like the Black Bean (I do too) try them with a couple slices of avocado and a slice of tomato on top. The avocado tastes so yum with the black bean!

I had no idea Amy's monstrosity is gf! Tastes like cardboard, eh? Oh, well. My fave veggie burger is from Houston's restaurant; there are several copycat versions on the web, all of which are really good. I am seriously hungry thinking of them!

Proxeda comments, "I find it curious when people that don't eat meat, still need to have something that tastes like it." I have always found it curious that people find this curious... People choose to not eat meat for various reasons: ethical, health, weight, etc., but usually NOT because they don't like the taste and/or texture of it. That "curiosity" is like being curious about why a diabetic would use an artificial sweetener instead of living a life without ever eating anything sweet again.

Dr. Praeger's veggie burgers are the best! I eat them by themselves with a little yellow mustard...so many veggies & yummy textures & flavors. They have them at Trader Joes and also I have found them at Safeway and Raley's. Best veggie burgers ever, I promise you will love them!

I like the Morning Star Spicy Black Bean Burgers!

One, I'm not vegetarian but love vegetables and choose non meat alternatives when they taste good. I live for Garden Burger Portabello Mushrooms on top of a huge salad but Garden Burger Tomato Basil and Boca Burger tastes best with a bun and all the usual burger trimmings.

I like the Boca burgers but I'm not veggie so I eat more turkey burgers than beef because they are leaner.

I love meat and I love the tomato basil from Morningstar Farms. The plainest veggie burger I've had was the Boca Cheeseburger. It is good, too.

I agree with Amanda - MorningStar Farms Spicy Black Bean burgers rock! With a slide of swiss cheese and some BBG sauce! YUM!

The morning star grillers prime are my favorite. :) Mmmmm

I agree with Ce D. Dr. Praeger's are great - a real VEGGIE burger. The others are awful!!!

I disagree. Morningstar does not taste like a real hamburger. Rather, it tastes like meatloaf. Boca is where it's at. I love that flame-grilled taste.
